I bought a stock ford trunk release, installed that today with the fiberglass hood. Now no more keyhole or trim pieces. Looks alot smoother.

The trunk latch worked great. The trunk fits really well for a fiberglass part. One area of filing to make it fit and it needs a little work on the forward edge but bolted on and aligned in minutes.

I had those dreams but by then I was working all the time and with projects of my own it just wasn't in the cards. Heck my oldest daughter got a 93 LX 5.0l convertible with 55k miles and that car kept me so busy the next two got much newer cars. Buw watch out when the grand kids come. Then it will be make up time. Of course they will probably be electric golf carts by then......

The detroit locker is installed and axles are installed as well. Just working on retainers, the moser ones have too large of an inner ID and do not make good contact on the bearing and are only 3/16" thick. I have an order out for some Mark Williams retainers that are 1/4" thick and have a smaller inner diameter but are still u-shaped. I also ordered some currie ones that are smaller inner diameter and 1/4" thick and fulle 360 degree contact on the bearing. I am still researching using a tapered roller in a small bearing housing.

The new moser axles came without the lightning holes, ugggh, and are 2.8 lbs heavier than the stock axles. The detroit locker is 1 lb lighter than the stock carrier. Also the trunk is ~20 lbs lighter than the stock trunk. WooHoo, my car lost weight before new years.

I finished the install on the detroit locker. I am using the moser retainers and shimmed them for zero preload on the bearing. I will wait for the Mark Williams and currie and decide which one will get used.

I took the for a test drive on some sweeping freeway on ramps. I love the way the car feels, very responsive and tight. I think its ready for RTTC, when do we signup? I hope to do a SCCA event in san diego before RTTC to try and shake out any bugs. I guess a tow hook is next on my list, so I can get it on a trailer if it breaks.

Next project will be the steering.... but that will wait until after RTTC.

Is your Detroit a Truetrac or have any degree of slip before it engages? Great build thread btw.

Thanks, its a Detroit Locker. This is a mechanically locking diff. there is no slip.

I might have missed it Bryce but why did you choose a detroit locker over the tru trac?

I did not like the fact that the WaveTrac never locks up, it will always bias the torque. The detroit locker is predictable, it always does the same thing. I can drive with confidence knowing what the car will do with my inputs.

Under throttle a detroit locker will drive the inside wheel, whiel letting the outside wheel ratchet, until the insde wheel is spinning as fast as the outside wheel. This will be a hard impulse load but if you know its going to happen you can be prepared. The older Detroit lockers could have up to a 1/4 turn on the driveshaft until it would lock up, the new ones are better.

The only big issue is in reverse it will drive the outside wheel.

And after driving the car, there is no hard impulse under acceleration when the outside tire engages coming off a turn. Long sweepers are great! I doubt I will ever break my locker even drag racing with slicks and my dad's 600 horsepower race motor.

Interesting. Thanks for the input. I have to get one and I haven't decided what to do. I have an auto wrecker pumpkin in the car right now but I was just going to buy a whole unit from Moser when the time comes.

No prob, I think this was the best solution for my car and my driving style, maybe not the best for everyone.

One other thing to conisder, on all torque biasing diffs except for Wavetrac (their claim to fame) once the inside tire spins it will only supply the intial preset bias lets assume 2.5:1 to the outside tire. If the inside tire spins, lets say it take 10 ft lbs of torque to keep that tire spinning then the diff will only put 25 ft lbs of torque to the outside tire.

The wave trac will put all torque to the outside tire once the inside tire has no torque load on it, example: the inside tire is off the ground. Eventhough there will always be some torque to turn the tire (even when off the ground) brake drag is a big contributor. rock crawlers that use torque biassing diffs put there brakes on when one tire is off the ground.

I bought my Detroit locker from summit, they had a good sale and rebate from Eaton.

Congrats on the Nova getting out! Let me know if you need an extra hand bolting everything back on.

The girls are good. My daughter is almost all grown up, HAHA. The mother in law moves in today (she is from Texas), uggh. The wife goes back to work on Monday. I dont want my daughter to go to day care. My wife will work for 3 months and then become a stay at home mom until kindergarten starts.

I love the locker. It has been working great for street driving.

I started the planning for my tow hooks. I will be removing the rear bumper to save another 23 pounds and adding a tow hook off the stock bumper bolts to the frame. The front tow hook will sit in the middle of the valance cutout. It should look good and very funtional.

Love the car! What size wheels and tires? And what are the specs on the motor? The black rims just make the car!! Looks racy!

      Thanks COUG,

The black wheels are the old wheels but they were 16x7.5 with 4.75" backspace with 245/50/16 tires. The new wheels are 17x8 with 5bs 245/45/17 and 17x9.5 with 6.5"bs 275/40/17. I liked the black wheels too.

The motor is a 289 with k-model mustang crank and rods (shotpeened).

Comp cams custom ground cam, solid fat tappet, .500 lift, I would have to look up the other cam specs.

edelbrock heads with .190 intake valves, works very well with the cam and intake to keep the velocity up.

Victor jr. intake manifold and a 650 speed demon carb.

      roller rockers.

      ross pistons.

manifold is port matched to the heads and the heads are matched the header. reducing those steps really help.

Anything else you want to know?

      small bearing ford retainer plates

black plates are Mark Williams and the gold plates are currie

Both are for a small bearing ford and are 1/4" thick. The mosers were only 3/16 thick. The inner diameter of the outer race on the bearing is 2.45". Moser and MW have a plate ID of 2.65", this does not make full contact with the bearing and puts a higher stress on the plate. The currie plates have an ID of 2.25" this covers part of the polymer seal but would not cause any wear issues.

I will be pressing the bearings off and using these currie plates. My wheel centerline is almost lined up with the bearing centerline, therefore the moment on the bearing is reduced. I hope these will work for awhile. Once I notice a failure I will be switching to a full floater.

      tow hook

I started the front tow hook design, it will bolt to the front bumper mount and extend through the front valance (see cutout in attached picture). I will make this from 3/8" aluminum since it will have a 9" long moment from the eye to the first bolt.
