I picked up a copy of SW a few weeks ago so I've been playing around trying to learn and figured I would post my first item that has a bit of complexity to it. The center section of the housing is based on a dodecagon (12 sided polygon). Not complete as I have not figured out how to model a ring and pinion yet. Any tips for how to figure the math for an equation based gear. Had to be a lil artsy and make half of it out of smoked glass.
I am pretty pleased considering my very limited experience with SW.

Does anyone here do free form shapes?
That is where modeling gets complicated. Just wondering. I free form model daily as its my job.

What do you mean "free form"?

Free Form modeling is another term for surface modeling. There is no straight line, or primitive shape. Its all spline and arcs. Here is a real small example of a car body side molding.

I use CATIA at work. I use the surfaceing toolbox frequently.

Seat back side bolsters are solids trimmed by surfaces.

So how would you go about starting surface modeling?

For one you need to make sure your program has the surfacing option as most do not come with it.
      Looking for a new project

I have solidworks educational version. I think it is the whole thing because it is what the school uses to teach solidworks.

This is a gearbox for a geothermal steam turbine I had to design for a Mech. Eng. class a while ago...

That is the nicest geothermal steam turbine gearbox I've seen all day!...... Just kidding......

Hey, great job! I switched to SolidWorks 10 years ago (from Pro-E) and I love it. I too am a mechanical engineer (UCSB), but I graduated in... um ... let's just say, a while ago.

Keep up the great work........ All you need to do now is to apply your SolidWorks skills to creating Nova parts!!!!!

      Hey thanks!

I've used Inventor, Unigraphix, SoliWorks, and Pro-E, and I gotta say SW is by far the nicest/funnest, even though ProE is ridiculously powerful.

Anybody have any LSx engine models? I'm just looking for a simple model to assemble the block/head to mock up turbo piping & subframe for my Nova...

Agreed even though Pro E can be a huge pain in the ass.

I just went thru this thread and I'm quite impressed by all of the CAD talent on this site. I have over 10K hours on Catia doing aerospace/mechanical work and have been recently getting into surfacing. Also started learning Solidworks 2010 and it's pretty impressive so far.

Has anyone played around with modeling their entire car? Or at least the body of it, anyway. I'd love to have a CAD model of mine, but that would be a helluva project....

i working on an entire car. I use CATIA. I have the frame, wheels and suspension done. Maybe 30hours invested so far, but only during my breaks at work.

What operating system are you on? Are you using a 64-bit system? How much RAM does your computer have?
