I got the bars back into the chassis tonight. They look good, FIT WELL and have enough adjustment I could get the housing pulled in to the wheelbase dimensions and get the pinion angle roughly set. Of course that I won't be able to set correctly until the van is on the ground with weight on the springs.

I will be running a "mostly" stock C5/C6 set up on BadAst. I picked up a used set, complete, off eBay years ago and that is what I used for mock up. Used rotors, used red PBR calipers, basic stuff.

The calipers need to be refinished but are in good shape otherwise.

Here is where my conundrum starts:
I just started looking for "real" parts yesterday. I found these black coated rotors from Brake Motive and really like the look!

They are black zinc coated and I am wondering how long they will look nice before they start to wear and the steel itself starts to show... Anyone with experience?
I also have a set of brand new black Grand Sport calipers. What do you think? Black everything out?
The van itself is going to be white w/ black interior. All of the engine fittings will be black as well...
      What do you all think?

In my experience the coating comes right off the face of the rotor as soon as you use them. It does help prevent corrosion at the hub area so that's nice.

Personally I have seen/heard many warnings to steer clear of cross-drilled rotors. They may look cool, but they are much more prone to cracking. If you want more venting just do slotted only (yes much harder to find). Really even a good plain rotor with decent airflow will work very well in most cases. Brakes are always a function over form piece.

Thanks for the input. I've ran cross drilled and slotted rotors on my street cars (F-bodies) and have never had any problems with cracking. I think that comes into play more on parts that are driven really hard, get really hot and then have a lot of those hot/cold cycles on them. I have never seen a cracked or checked rotor that is driven normally...
With all of that said I may just run the used rotors I have. Clean them up and paint them and they'll do the job. Even the pads that came with the calipers are usable. Sand them out a bit with 320 grit on a stone and run them...

I just put some black zinc coated EBC rotors on my daily, and I don't think the coating even made it through break-in, so probably a good choice to use what you have.

      Mark,

Those rod ends could have used some extra filler.

      Thanks Andrew,
We talked about that. The guy who welded them builds drag cars for a living and I trust his judgement. These are the bottom bars and are 2" OD x 1/4" wall. What you see is almost a 1/4" of weld that was done down in a chamfered groove. This was actually the second pass. The top bars were bored out and the wall is only 1/8th there. I watched him weld them and he got a really nice root pass on all of the bars. He said my bars are really heavy duty and there is more weld in them then he ever sees in his drag 4 links. I guess more weld would make them look better but I doubt it would add any more strength...
      Should I be worried?

I appreciate your thoughts Andrew and, if these bars weren't so damned heavy, you would be absolutely correct! There is so much weld in there now I hope there will not be an issue.

I posted this in the Drivetrain section as well for a little more exposure...

Okay, pulled the axles out of the housing tonight so I could install the bearing spacers I forgot to put in the first time.
      These:

Slipped on the spacers and reinstalled the RH axle, no problems at all, slipped right in.

The LH axle will not go this last 3/4"s of an inch.

I can tell it is hitting something in the 3rd member. It is not hanging up at the housing end. Something in the 3rd member is stopping it from slipping all the way in. What could it be? I have had these things in and out a dozen times during the build with not one issue assembling them... What changed?

      Just a follow up here
I found this same issue on the H.A.M.B. last night and got it figured out and put back together.
      Here is what happened:
While I was pulling the RH axle (I.E. WHALING on it with a 3lb dead blow hammer!) the spider gears for the LH axle got misaligned.
      To fix it:
I stuck a broom handle thru the pass. side lug studs to keep the axle from spinning and, after three tries of rotating the LH axle in small increments, it slid right in. Very satisfying when it clunked down in there that last 3/4"! All bolted up and ready to go now! I knew it had to be something simple... I went to bed and went right to sleep.
This is the first time I have had an issue with the misaligned gears in a Traction Lock. I did pull the drivers side axle first, it came out with a few taps from the dead blow. The RH side was a bit more work and I had to really whale on it to pop it loose. I guess that is how the gears got misaligned. Next time I'll pull the pass side first.
I won't forget this one for a while...

Put some time into the A/C Bracket build. Spent around 3 hours getting the compressor lined up with the pulleys and set at the same angle in the chassis.

Trimming the laser cut brackets and making the spacers so everything lined up correctly took some time.

I used an angle finder to make sure the pulley matched the angle of the engine, so it is square. A straightedge on the pulley let me line it up fore/aft.

After a bit of welding I have a functional bracket.

The bottom bracket in place with it's spacers.

I'll run it and the alternator pulleys thru the blaster tomorrow and get some primer on them.
Now, with this done I can get the front suspension installed.

Ran the brackets through the blaster this morning. Wiped down with Prep-Sol, primed with etching primer and sprayed with VHT Caliper Paint.

We'll see how they turn out. I use the silver for painting intakes but have never used the black.
The alternator brackets primed and painted.

The A/C brkts primed and painted.

This paint dries to a semi-flat so we'll see how it looks later today.
Heading out to open houses this afternoon.
      Thanks for watching!

Put on a 2nd coat this afternoon. The paint looks real nice with a satin sheen after it dries. I stuck on the A/C bracket to get a pic.

This is the rear alternator brkt.

Front alt bracket and adjustable A/C brkt.

I've been fighting leg and back cramps the last couple of days so I haven't been out in the shop much. I should be back at it in a day or so. I want to have the front suspension together by this weekend.

The caliper paint looks like it will work very well. It has a nice sheen to it so I will pick up a couple more cans to get the pulleys and some other parts painted.

      Thanks for looking!

Looks good. I'd be curious how i holds up once everything is running and you have a few miles on it.
When I've painted brake calipers with "brake caliper paint" they never seemed to hold up as well as I expected,
but probably better than regular paint.

I use the silver caliper paint to spray new intake manifolds. The paint holds up very well and does not take any stains like the raw casting does. It looks just like cast aluminum so the intake looks like it was never touched. We'll see how the black does. It seems to be hardening up just fine.

Hit it pretty hard out in the shop today. Pulling together the front suspension stuff, I had to repaint the upper arms as they had a hard life during the build stage. Lots of scars and scratches from years of mock up and mock down...

      Looks better with fresh paint.

Painted the upper ball joints as well and I am ordering Grade 8 bolts for the UBJ's instead of the cheap azz hardware that came with them...

Brake lines are all ran and terminated. Rear end lines are hooked up to the frame and soft line brackets. Front lines are hooked up and ready to go.

I got one of the lower control arms mounted but have to order more bolts to get everything bolted up right.

I got the frame leveled side to side and back up on jack stands so I can work on the LCA's and the steering rack.

      Thanks for watching!

I got the upper arms bolted on tonight. It will be interesting to see just how close the alignment will be to the "as designed" locations you see here.
With the arms bolted down it will be easier to install the ball joints when I don't have to chase the arms all over the build bench...

I was going to start cleaning up the Corvette rotors tonight but ran out of attention span before I got to them.
      Thanks for watching!
