65 fastback build

As a body man and painter I would never start with something so bad. Not that it can't be done, but I just want to start with something a bit nicer and more solid. Good for you, and Tony for resurrecting a car that 99% of the car guys out there would walk away from.

I would never take on anything like this without Tony's help.

Believe it or not this was a better option to buying a new dynacorn body.

Great question

The original plan was to convert my 66 coupe to a fastback but that would basically mean only the dash would have been used. Plus the coupe has some sentimental meaning to me and my wife.
Before I had decided not to cut up the coupe, I had purchased this fastback with the intent to use the frame for the conversion.
The decided why not make the fastback into a new shell and redo the coupe eventually.

Believe it or not, this fastback will be cheaper than a new body and will be almost as good and have the original vin.

Overall not the way I had originally planned it but it seems to be coming along better than I thought it would.

I never would have guessed it would be cheaper to strip a car down THAT far vs buying a new stamped shell. Especially once you consider the cost of paying someone to do the body work. Seems like it would be easy to rack up $18k in parts and labor.

I'm only asking because the wheels are starting turn on a next project, and body work is out of my wheelhouse.

Body work is out of my league as well. Luckily I got tony doing it.
When it is all said and done, I will have less than $18k for a new shell with doors, fenders, mini tub, deck lid, Shelby hood and front valance, 68 shock towers. This includes buying the original car and having everything delivered to me.

Tony started putting together the frame rails. You can see the 68 notched shock towers and core support with the wider radiator opening.
Hopefully see more progress this week.

Tony is making progress. Sent me pics of the DSE mini tub frame sections installed. Hope this allows for a 315 tire to fit like DSE says it will.

Progress today. More pics from tony.
He started test fitting the 68 towers.
He had to use the 68 aprons (pictured in black) to get the alignment correct on the towers. We couldn't use the 68 aprons due to the 65 fender bolt holes not being the same. Once he got the alignment right, he installed the 65 aprons.

Look at the clearance the 68 towers will give.

Also the large opening of the 68 radiator opening.

I will once I get it back. Thinking of using the DSE subframes that go thru the floor. May try to tie the rear lower control arms into the subframes
