I took a gamble that this thread wouldn't get canned, and took some time to think about this for a while. I eventually voted for "Door Number Three" because of the phrase "Pro-Touring".

My plan is to build what I consider to be a G-Machine, which to me is Door Number Four". Barely street-legal and capable of outrageous performance. Of course, being me, my car still won't fit the bill of what most would consider to be "pure" in that regard either because some of the components I choose will not the the best choice for maximum performance - but they are what I want, so I will have them.

I think the "labels" and these discussions of them are fun because they reveal a lot about the personalities behind the machines. It's just a given that there is going to be some emotional tension, because it's all based on emotion. Hot rods are built to fulfill emotional needs. The important point is to disagree like men (and women?) and laugh about it later over a round of beers (make mine a Pepsi) like mature, civilized, adults.

The one thing that I don't see mentioned a lot is that you don't have to flog your car on a race track to appreciate the goodies underneath it. They're fun to drive around on public roads too. To me, there's nothing like a car with a tight sporty ride that doesn't reel and rock like a dingy in the ocean, and precise steering with good feedback that doesn't require an aerobic workout to stay on your line/in your lane. You don't have to beat the crap out of it to appreciate that. A good Pro-Touring vehicle or G-Machine to me is one that is an expression of its owner in appearance, and a natural extension of his or her abilities on the road or track. It's all subjective. There is no sanctioning body, no class rules to meet - only the individuals expectations.

There is a big difference between a Pro-Touring car and a full on race car.
I think my car lands more on the race car side of the equation since I have sacraficed a lot of driveability for speed.
If you ask me Jody Bernard's old 'yellow 69 Camaro with the Blown/FI Aluminum 540 Wayne Due subframe and 5-speed TKO pretty much defined pro-touring
1971 Camaro, 383 stroker ~500HP,M21 Trans with lightened flywheel. All Sorts of Auto-x Goodness in the Suspension. 12" Brakes ->SOLD

But ask me about my 2004 STi Auto-x car...

      To me..

The Mule, Chicayne and such = pro-touring

Your car, Katz's car and such = g-Machine

Steveo's car, my 68 and such = Street Fighter

But all our cars are one thing.. fun-touring.

Because that's the way it is ?

After something one of you or all of you said I got the Idea that maybe? just maybe? when I started building my car there was no pro-touring and I really wasn't sure what it was. I came to this site and found out that I (myself not my car) Fit in here in a way that I didn't fit in anywhere else.

So maybe it's not my car and that it is truely me that is pro-touring then my car is a P/T just because I am here and if you want a P/T car anywhere in the world you have to come here to have a P/T car!!!!

So when others don't get it or don't want to be here they don't have a P/T car or a clue.

If you have been here 1 time you are in the P/T way whether you know it or not because liking it or not liking it makes it a reality either way.

So long live this site and PRO-TOURING forever . Thanks Larry

For whatever reason I am unable to view the videos of PhaseShift's car at work, but I can hear them, and they sound killer!!! I hope to view them at home later this week.

I never really thought of Chicane as ProTouring, even though it has "toured" plenty. To me, the fact that is is airbaged and still a stock X frame kind of makes it a cruiser to me. However, I guess the Mule and Chicane may very well define the two ends of the Protouring spectrum.
The Mule, is probably a good definition as it has enough horsepower to hurt ya, upgraded suspension, big brakes, bunch a tire, creature comforts, and it "tours" regularly. To me, pro touring is just what it say's. A car that is capable of touring, and while it may not be the absolute King on the road coarse, or King at the dragstrip, it is still plenty powerfull, handles and brakes better then most other cars, and most likely will kick howevers ass pulls up beside you at the traffic light.

Chicane has 1100 HP. That makes for some fast cruising! Big brakes too. I don't know if it'll turn though.

Just absolutely craziness. Don't titles or descriptions of the style of car to be given, pro-touring, street fighter, etc. take time to evolve? What I get from reading these post on this web site, is that we are still learning. Still making changes. Adding, deleting parts, etc. Most of us are still trying to figure out what we have, what we want, what we can afford, and what works best for our needs and how the car is to be used. Remember, at the 2005 Detroit Autorama these cars are just beginning to show up on display. Debate is good thing. Crying, and never coming back to this forum is wrong, as someone on this forum plans on doing. If you have a belief, stick to it. Support it. Do not walk away from it because others disagree.

Oh, by the way, here is my two cents worth. Even though I'm becoming more interested about road racing our cars and how much safer it is then on the street, I'm not sure I would want to take my GTO out on the track. I have too much time and money invested. The Mustang Saleen S/C I have, yes. So does that now make my Judge an antipro-touring car because I'm not going to race it? Titles, titles, titles, I don't give a sh^t. I building what I want, with my vision, my dreams, my sweat and tears and my money. The hell with anybody else. Love it, hate it, whatever works for you. Have a good day.
