John, I agree: the post in full was necessary. Once I saw the dogma that underlay his whole argument, I was able to understand his POV. I wasn't responding to you; I was responding to Mr. Knox.

And Todd (latenight72): Sorry. I didn't read your post. It's just too hard for me to make the mental connections needed to comprehend what you are saying. If that's ok with you, it's certainly ok with me.

I take your point about cordiality. No doubt we can do better as mods. For the record, we do make significant use of PMs, and usually work together to jointly figure out how to proceed. It's a rare event for one of us to "go it alone" without some consultation with the others. It helps keep us consistent. But we'll not improve without some criticism, so thank you.

As far as fixing spelling errors and/or grammar, we do it all the time, especially in thread titles. Doing much more than that is too much work, at least until Larry comes through with those big raises he's been promising us.

It's not really the spelling or grammatical terms, but rather use of simple punctuation and capital letters. These are pretty basic.

The problem is for the few seconds you save not using these, you force several others to spend 10 times as long figuring out what your trying to say. It's like saying, "well my time is much more important than the rest of you." If you really feel you have something important to say, then back it up by making it legible.

Well put. I would add one more thing: paragraphs. If you're on your 5th sentence and haven't started a new paragraph, you should definitely consider it.

My prior post was a tongue-in-cheek mocking of hard to read posts with poor grammar and punctuation. It was meant as a light hearted joke.

      LOL.

It's always a good time watching these threads develop. You guys gotta understand us mods are just other car guys who, for whatever reason, agreed to mod this board. We all have our little pet peeves, just like you. We all deal with things differently. We're a cast of characters for sure. But the general point we try to convey is the same. Keep things on topic. Try your best to make a sensible, legible post.

There are many members of this board who's native language aren't even english. We know that. We deal with it. There's also members who *deliberately* type and spell with the intent to be annoying, or provocative.

Why point out when someone has really bad grammar? So that person knows how they are being perceived. Maybe they didn't realize their post looks jumbled. Or that people just don't read them for fear of it being one long run on sentence. We're trying to help most times.

Like was said above, we're doing the best we can. It's not as fun being a mod as you might think, stepping on peoples toes all the time. Trust me. It's hard.

I really don't think the folks that are mis spelling words and using improper punctuation are doing it on purpose.

This is exactly what I have been seeing. And this is the only forum out of many I spend time on that I can say this about.

Tact is a lot like common sense.... unfortunately, it is just all too uncommon.

That's true. But if someone can not understand what the poster is trying to say, what does it matter? I would rather have someone tell me how my grammar sucked so bad that he/she was unable to understand my post, than to just not reply.

At least with that, I am given the opportunity to clarify what I am trying to say, and then a response can be tallied.

Tony didn't say everybody does it on purpose. He said there are some who do. And that's true. Watch carefully... and you'll see them. Chatspeak, odd capitalization, etc.

It comes down to this (sorry to be Captain Obvious): only the person writing the post knows what they actually mean. Everybody else has to figure it out from their written words. Good spelling, grammar, and thought organization (paragraphs) goes a long way to help increase the level of understanding.
