Drifting thread - i can't help but chime in

I've been very involved in drifting since 2003, including professional level (paid, sponsors, www.BubbaDrift.com etc).

Why do we do it? Fun! It is something that we enjoy doing. I enjoy learning the car control. I am not a professional level driver, i am in awe of my friends car control. I go to have fun and learn. I can get a lot more seat time than at an auto-x, and it is more laid back. Local practices involve large lots with nothing to hit, and i use free tires that people are throwing away, etc.

recent video of the IROC playing around - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ERW_DyecZU

There are a lot of idiots involved in drifting which does not help the image problem. But of all the motorsports i've been involved in, it makes me smile the most.

Well there we go... a very level-headed response. Can we call this horse dead boys?

(BTW: Loving the IROC with the LS in it. I should do that to the GTA)

The LS1 Iroc is sweet. That car looks like a blast to drive. It doesn't matter what your take on drifting is, watching/hearing that car move about the track makes me wish I had one like that to beat on.

Post up the next time you are Mineral Wells. I'd love to come out and watch you run. I was a big fan of the El Camino when you guys first started running it and especially placing at the drift events.

We drifted all the time when I was young, but we called it 'driving a muscle car in the snow'. That's how the Japanese started it too.
It is fun to hang the rear out without flipping around. 'Hey Look At Me!' It's video game racing.

One thing I've noticed is they get their steering angles by shortening the steering arms. Cut and Shut they call it. That's something we'd never do. [and Japan orgs. have banned it.]

I don't want to become a white trash old fart, so I won't hate someone because they do things different then me. At least we are all car guys, as opposed to idiots who drive A to B while talking on the phone, slurping coffee, and shaving or putting on makeup.

I plan on getting some drifting training down in Florida in the coming weeks/months. It looks like a lot of fun. I met with my instructors and PRI and we're getting it set up. I'll post some pics.

James... I have been wanting to go to one of those events for awhile now in Mineral Wells and give it a shot. We are building a 1st gen s-10 to try and get into drifting, its something I was always intriqued with and wanted to try. So maybe when this s-10 is done I'll hit up one of these events.

Drifting with old american muscle? Thought that i had to prove it, and yes it can be done even in serious form with pretty minor mods.

Here´s one quick vid. Don´t bother fact that other guy bumbs me little bit

      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KdZlFQ_7X

If want more to look at, there´s long video from my first competitotin with Camaro

      http://www.vastaheitto.com/videot/fpda2010motopark1.wmv

      My qualifying run about 15min
      Tandems 24:40min and 26,40min

Generally on that film, final runs are alo definately worth to watch, about 36:20min.

and clip from me very first tests with this, little wobly then
      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RGWuRxKOHPQ

Car has pretty much original chassis / suspension construction, Solid axle and leafsprings at rear, shock absorbers changed to coilovers. Body has pretty much fiberglas (car weights 1300kg) and engine is cammed LS3 and T56 gearbox.

How fast do a set of rear tires wear out doing that?

...and only the skyline GTRs are AWD. The GTS is a RWD car.

I can understand the appeal of drifting...it's keeping your car on the limits in a different way.

I can't see it as a sport any more than figure skating though. They're very similar 'sports'.

I can get the trans am through a few turns without losing it....it has quick steering, a good, strong LSD and enough power to overcome the wheels......no handbrake though...which does mean you can only lose traction by giving it tons of power or dumping the clutch....takes some practice not to send it too far.

I can't justify the death of the tyres though TBH. Gets too expensive for the reward. lol

....Thats what I was thinking. It just wouldn't be feasible to do on the weekends or something, the average Joe just can't afford the tires, not to mention the wear and tear on the car.

Another reason I think the imports are used so much (besides fashion), particularly at entry level is that IRS tends to give less forward bite than a live axle. I know for a fact it's easier to get an s14 spinning the wheels than my stock trans am live rear setup. IRS is generally rubbish at getting engine power to the ground....particularly when they run the camber they do after lowering the cars.

One further reason could be the reduced engine braking a little turbo engine provides. A big V8 with high compression will engine brake substantially more making the transitions a bit harder (I'd imagine...don't know for sure).....where as the wheels will keep the little turbo engines spinning more easily and keep it more predictable when back off the throttle.

Obviously in proper racing, engine braking is a useful feature....but in a slide, the throttle makes my trans am more snappy on the lift-off than little engined cars.

Cool discussion. Liftoff is actually one of the many techniques to drift. The top 2 cars in the last 2 rounds of Formula Drift are V8 powered. It's an interesting continuation of the Ford vs Chevy battle. Those 2 cars were an LS1 powered Nissan 240sx and Vaughn Gittin's 2011 Coyote 5.0L Mustang. Good times!
