      T56 Neutral Saftey Switch?

I was wondering if there is some type of switch that could be added to a Viper T56 Tranny to provide a neutral saftey switch. I'm looking to add a remote starter and I want to make sure the tranny is in neutral before it tries to start. ANy Ideas?

I don't know about that, but I know alot of guys wire the remote start wire to the e-brake. So, it will only start if the e-break is on. I don't know if there is anything in the viper trans to tell what gear it's in. You could probably rig something up to where you have a button at each gear and that shorts out the ground so the remote start won't start if it's in gear. Makes perfect sense in my head. lol

Do any production cars have remote start with a stick from the factory? Wondering how they do it.

I agree with brrymnvette, only way I can think of doing it is to have a switch at every gear, & if in gear (instead of N) it would NOT start.

      Good question...I have a Viper T56 too.

Well, here is 1 way to do it:

I called Ricks first gen and asked what the factory neutral safety switch was for a 4 speed car. I bought the switch and it works off the clutch pedal. When the clutch is depressed you can start it.

Pretty easy, but it is not specific to a trans either.

btw I have a t56 trans as well.

I think you are missing the original question. He wants to have a neutral switch on the shifter to insure it is in neutral so he can REMOTELY start it. A switch on the clutch pedal means someone has to be in the car so a remote start is not needed.

I was thinking about putting micro switches at all six gear positions to tell me when it was in gear to disable remote starting. I'll look at the shifter housing to determine if it is even possible to do it.

Someone just made a kit for old BMW's on another forum. The way his setup works is that you have to have the ebrake on and the engine running to arm it. Then you turn off the ignition and it stays running until you get out and close the door. Once the door is closed the engine turns off.

Sounds weird, but that way it will always be in neutral. It's more complicated than I'm making it (and I have no idea how it really works lol) but it's guaranteed to be failsafe.

Some aftermarket T56 shifters have bolts, front and rear, to limit the travel of the shift lever. I'm told that such travel stops are unnecessary for the T56. If that's the case, you might be able to use the travel stop holes to rig up switches that could detect if the transmission was in gear. That's about all I can think of for the OP's application.

I remember in the mid 90's when the remote start craze started there was a company that made a InfraRed transmitter/receiver that told the unit if the car was in neutral or not. Basically, it was a IR beam transmitter/receiver that was mounted to the shift lever and went to a reflector mounted on the trans case, then returned to itself, telling the unit that the vehicle was indeed in neutral. Couldn't tell you if this is still made or who made it but it worked back then.

I took a look at it again and after some testing I've decided to use a Prox switch. I did look into micro switches but there was no good location to detect neautral.
The 12mm prox switch is used to detect steel objects within 4mm of the face. If I drill a hole in the shifter housing of the tranny, I can locate that the shifter is in neutral. I will mount the prox next week and post some pictures of my progress.

Here are a few pictures with one of the prox switches installed. They are positioned to be on only when the shifter is in the neutral position. I am showing one of the proxes but there will be another on the other side of the shifter too. However, Only one of the proxes is really needed. I just wanted to install two for redundant detection...I don't need any failures on this one!

Will they also detect straight forward/back displacement for the 3/4 gears?

That's right! They only come on when the shifter is in neutral. All other positions the prox is off. I was able to get both proxes on either side to be off while in gear and on when in neutral. I used two proxes for safety reasons. Don't want it to start while in gear!!!

Understood, I also have the ISIS system. Can you give part nos. for the switches you used?

I know this is very old thread, but how did this work out?

If there any other that have tried, or done other ways?

Seems like a lot of trouble to go through. Most cars before 1970 didn't have any safeties. After that, it was customary to install a switch on the clutch pedal, so that the car would not start unless the clutch was pressed in.

Yes understood, but that doesn't work well for remote start.
