      How's Big Black coming along?
I have a 66 Impala and I am in the planning stages. A little unclear on what direction I want to go, but I am inspired by your project and curious how your project is progressing.

Slowly. I haven't been lighting the world on fire with progress. Since the last update, I have bought a Dakota Digital controller for my (future) Vintage Air unit, and made a (crude) cardboard mockup of how it will fit in the '59 Impala dash. It's going where the radio used to go. The ridetech air ride controller will go in the space below, which used to be an ashtray. I also took a spare ashtray and made a filler plate to be welded in where the stock hvac controls were:

The heads are off my engine to go in for a performance valve job & the Comp VVT cam will be going in soon. I picked up some LS9 head gaskets and Holley valve covers that eliminate the coil brackets. The engine was super clean inside. It's a 2007 L92 that was pulled out in 2008 with something like 9000 miles on it.

Other than that, I've got the car up on Race Ramps and I've been just scraping, sanding and wire brushing the bottom of the car in preparation for Lizard Skin sound insulation and heat insulation. The weather is really getting nice so I'm hoping to get this finished and sprayed soon before it's 100* in the garage. Then I have to finish the firewall so the engine can go back in for good.

I am in the suspension stage and struggling with whether to go springs or air ride. I like the idea of air ride but I am worried about spending $6k and getting a bouncy ride. I see you in stalled air ride. Any advice or things I need to consider?

Well, mines not on the road yet, but I've ridden in air ride cars that handle great- not bouncy. As long as it's properly engineered, the ride will be great.

      Thanks, I appreciate your input.

You don't see these cars built this way too much and your style is exactly what I would like to do with my '66. Passed on from my Mom, I'll be following similar steps....

Getting there. Wish I had a rotisserie and the space to use it. Got the frame and floors cleaned up & I'm about ready to pull the suspension to access the rest. Then I can finally spray the frame in black and Lizard Skin the floors.

Engine is also progressing- Heads are back from the machine shop. Took a week off for Power Tour in June but probably only going to do a couple days and work on the car for the rest of the week.

That is going to be one killer ride, when done. Definitely not a cookie-cutter car, for sure.

That is an incredible amount of work! You definitely have an eye for detail.

Are you losing your glove box to install the Vintage Air unit?

I keep looking at them but haven't tried a mock up box to see how it would fit.

Well, I’ve been back after it. I plasma cut out the stock dash and got the ‘59 Impala dash mocked up in place. My brother patched the floor shifter hole because I bought a Lokar floor shifter as I’m now going to build a custom center console.

Also re-did the front shock mounts and then pulled all the front suspension off. The rear end is out as well so I can finish prepping for paint/Lizard Skin.

Enjoyed your build thread. I was looking for information on installing a 6L90 in my 65. I noticed you had ground clearance concerns. do you recall what your ground clearance would be at stock ride height?

The car hasn’t been at stock ride height in a long long time. When I mocked up the 6L90 it was lowered 3.5” on drop spindles and springs. With the trans tunnel cut out and trans jacked up into place til the tailshaft hit the floor, the trans still hung way too low. It’s been a while so I don’t remember the measurements but for any real ground clearance, the entire driveshaft tunnel would need to be cut out and raised.

Inside you can see the new column, as well as the 4L80E mockup transmission. It probably would've fit with minimal clearancing... but it fits really easily with a giant hole cut in the tunnel.

Is the column that you used a direct fit or a universal one?

It is a Flaming River universal 30 inch which fit perfect with the stock dash. The collar hits the 59 dash so I’m probably going to have to go with a longer one or modify the dash. I just have to put the seat back in and mock it up. I don’t want the wheel too close.
