      Outlaw Vintage Racing NASA SE

Has anyone gone out to see these races? I believe a member here runs a 68 Firebird. Virtually no rules regarding period correctness or modernizing. Anyone got a project car they can't afford body/paint, interior, and bling for but already built a killer drivetrain & suspension? Here's a place to run it!

      From the NASA SE site

      Outlaw Vintage

Racing in the NASA-SE Thunder Group is a new Vintage Race group: Outlaw Vintage. Outlaw Vintage intends to be home for the builder/racer who desires to road race a vintage pony car, but not be confined to vintage performance parts or vintage rules. Instead, any modern components can be combined to create the vintage appearing race car of the builder's wildest dreams or modest budget as the case may be. Cars are grouped using a power/weight fromula with a bump rule for certain modifications. The organizers encourage builders to keep the external appearance simular to how the cars would have presented in the origional Trans-Am serices, but it is up to the builder's discretion. Contact GT350_R for more information.

That sounds like the perfect place for the extreme end of our group!

I have a 70 trans am I would love to run in the outlaw vintage series. I have several more HPDE levels to go through before I'm prepared for that though.

I run in the Outlaw Vintage group and it's a blast. I ran a 66 Shelby replica before, currently running an 85 Trans Am and I just picked up a 70 Challenger. The class is on the move too and is expanding to at least one more region next year. Last race of this season is Dec 6-8 at Road Atlanta. Come out and say hi!!

That looks like a great class that will let about ANYTHING play. Get the stickiest tires you can afford and bang away!

Rules are pretty straight forward.... 30 year old vehicle (or homologated), power to weight ratio and wheel widths. Pretty easy and has made for some great cars and action on track!

I was looking for the exact rules, but I couldn't find them. Anyone have a link to the rules?

We are in the middle of revising them. I literally wrote the newest revision this morning and the series director is reviewing them. I'll post them as soon as the 2014 edition is approved. If you have any specific rules questions.... Please ask away!!

What sort of modifications would cause one to be bumped up in class? Any transmission/clutch rules? Suspension mods?

No trans or clutch restrictions. We currently have several running jericos and I'm probably switching to one in the offseason. Suspensions mods are free. Power to weight ratio is the balancing points along with wheel widths. Modern engines (LS, Coyote, etc...) are allowed to be swapped in but the vehicle must run a corporate engine or you're bumped straight to V1. Ie no LS powered 66 Mustang in V2, but a coyote powered one would be ok.

V1 is unlimited so almost anything goes. One example is a 240Z we have in V1 that's powered by a modified LS7.

V2 is where we expect to see most American muscle to run. The class is where cars will appear close to period correct but are allowed to run modern engines, suspensions and brakes. Aftermarket composite panels, wheels flares and spoilers are ok too. The three cars I posted pics of above all are in V2. In V2 we have a 6.5:1 power to weight ratio and a wheel width limit of 9.5". Gordon's Firebird is Pontiac powered but has aftermarket aluminum heads, a hightower jerico and aftermarket suspension. My 66 shelby replica has a SVO crate engine, toploader, rear disc brakes and 16" wheels The Trans Am has a 350 SBC with aftermarket heads, bear brakes, tubular suspension, etc. The 70 Challenger I'm finishing has a 408 stroker, tubular control arms, coil over shocks and custom front and rear spoilers. You get the idea.

Most run Hoosier R6, but any DOT legal tire is ok. Full slicks get you bumped a class.

I would imagine chassis dyno, because it is more accessible and more easily varifiable on location.

Each NASA region has certified chassis dyno locations. Vehicle needs run at one of these locations and power certified. Scales are usually at the track and at anytime you could be impounded as you exit the track from a race and weighed on the spot. Easy process.

A new website is under construction and the rules are under revision for 2014 with some minor changes. Till then you can see the current rules here:
