      Threaded fitting oil leak!!!

Anyone have suggestions to stop a freakin oil leak on a pipe thread fitting? Threads are on a NPT-AN adapter for my remote oil filter mount. I've installed the fittings dry and with teflon tape and the damn thing still drips! I also replaced the fitting with a new one just in case and the new fitting drips too!

Is there some miracle thread goop out there or maybe a home remedy I don't know about that will fix this?

Since I'm driving this car to RTTH on Thursday, I think it's an emergency!

      TIA!

There is white paste you can use rather than teflon tape. I've stopped using the tape and started using the paste in everything including hydraulics for NPT fittings. For me it has been a much better solution.

I just read the label on this stuff and it says it's for heating and potable water systems. This leads me to believe it's not compatable with oil. I think I'll take a drive to the store to see what's available.

Is the fitting coming out of the filter housing a tapered fitting or just a pipe thread type fitting? Looks like the A&N fitting should be a tapered fitting? Those fittings connect normally to a standard 37° AN adapter?

Yes it's the fitting that's coming out of the filter mount. The threads are NPT but they don't look tapered to me. The AN half of the fitting isn't leaking so I'm good there.

Worst case scenario, I'll take it all apart and weld the fittings to the mount!

      Sure it isn't cracked?

If it isnt cracked, you could of course go ugly temporarily and JB weld the threads, but I'd keep it a secret

The stuff I use is in a tube and is from Permatex. You can also get stuff from Parker. It's definitely for oil systems.

Just make it a permanent seal with quick-dry JB weld.

Actually use yellow gas pipe approved thread tape its heavier and will fill threads most effectively.
nothing wrong with PTFE liquid thread sealant, or tape, leave first thread open as in no tape or sealant and use liberally or 3 to 4 wraps of tape.
It will seal or show as a crack, also dont forget and go to a Pep Boys and buy a bottle of oil or water leak dye, buy a cheap black light(UV) flash light and look for a crack.

Before I did anything drastic such as welding the fittings to the filter mount, I wandered over the Advance Auto and I found this new Permatex racing stuff. I know the description doesn't say anything about threads, but the back of the package says for any "metal to metal" application.

I took the mount off the car, removed the fittings and cleaned everything with solvent. After it was all dry I applied the new Permatex and let it set up like the directions said. It doesn't run and it get pretty tacky pretty quick. I put the mount in the aluminum jaw vice and reinstalled the fittings.

Tomorrow when I get home from work I'll put everything back together on the car and test it. If this doesn't work, the three pieces will become one!

thats more of a gasket maker Herb, but it should work. You want something that is going to stay malleable.

Tape sucks, i agree on using paste thread sealer.

The problem that you might have is it might not be a NPT hole but a straight thread and crush ring seal as most high pressure fittings are.

What I have just read it needs a crush washer ie a copper 1 or loctite do a hydraulic thread sealer which is quite thick.

The stuff I tried didn't work. Since I plan to hit the road for RTTH on Thursday morning I don't have time to try a bunch of different thread sealers! I'll be dropping the mount and fittings off at the welder in the morning. Hopefully it will be done so I can pick it up on my way home from work!

Are you absolutely sure it's from the threads and not a crack in either part??

Yep, positive it's the threads and the parts aren't cracked.

You know, my Aeromotive fuel pump and filter use ORB fittings. When I ordered the filter mount I talked to the guy at Hamburger and he said it was 3/4 NPT so that's what I've been using. I'll bet money I should have been using ORB fittings!

I think you're on to something...

I think I can see the boss in the picture you posted, but I can't quite tell; NPT fittings have something that looks like a boss, but it's more of a thread starter. The smooth, un-threaded boss at the top of the threads will be a dead giveaway of an ORB though. The only crappy thing is now that you've screwed an NPT in there a few times, the ORB won't thread in nicely either, but hopefully it'll stop your leaking woes.

      ORB

(disregard the "rear view" for our purposes)

      NPT

Note the beginnings of a thread in the somewhat boss-like bevel at the top of the threads.

Doesn't the manufacturer of that filter head list the fitting type?
