I did a site search here and checked general Googleness on this,..

I'm curious if the Barry Grant carbs these days are as good as I was thinking they were a dozen years or more ago.

There are some unhappy folks out there in a couple forums but I'm not sure if that's just a few vocal peeps, or is it a trend at BG?




Anyone have any thoughts on BG carbs....quality and service?

The only problem I have had is the acc. pump loosened up a little on me and was drippping....Pulled the carb tightened it up and have not had any other issues. I've had mine for 3-4 years....no complaints!

Did you come across the recent post where the primary and secondary blocks were reversed from the factory? How does that get past quality control?

If I was buying a carb these days I would look at QuickFuel.

Yeah my primary and secondary blocks were reversed but everything else was fine. I was replacing the gaskets with the blue holley removable ones anyway to do jet changes so it really wasnt any extra effort.

I have a 850 Demon on my 496 in my Camaro and have had a 650 street demon vac secondariies on a 327 in the past.

I have not had problems. In fact many of the features you would have had to either modify or pay way more for are standard on the Demon stuff.

Don't get me wrong. I am a die hard Holley guy but fell in love with the demon products. I have also bought a 3310 from Holley only to find the primary fuel bowl full of machine shavings.

My buddy bought a pair of 750 demons for use on his 6-71 blown small block ,thru an ebay seller. There were zero QC problems with the carbs. They were built correctly with zero defects.
He had trouble getting the carbs to work right with the blower. Then he picked up the phone. The tech guys at BG were very helpfull. BG ended up selling him base plates equipped for boost referencing.
Problem solved , everything works great.

He could have saved himself a bunch of grief and cash if he called them first and asked what to buy, before he ordered up.


The technical phone guys are built into the cost of the product, so use it before you spend your money.

BG may not give you the best price on their own stuff, so shop around after they tell you what you need.

I've heard great things about Quick Fuel also. My buddy runs one of their carbs on his drag race big block nova.............he's very happy with it.

Yup, I remember all these problems. Along with multiple people getting these carbs and having all sorts of quality problems that should not have gotten past QA. And I have been dealing with Barry Grant when the naming scheme was still "Silver Claw,Bear Claw etc.

It will take some time to repair their reputation with myself and others.

You would be correct in that they should not have made it past qc but that was several years ago and a lot has changed. Since being made aware of the problem we openly admitted to having a problem with the shavings and took may steps to help eliminate them. We posted those back at the time but some of them involved adding a sonic timed wash for the metering blocks as well as changing the way some parts were machined , transported and even stored in the building. Vacuum equipment was installed under work benches to draw stray particles away from the parts as they were being assembled as well as several other changes. We constantly look at new ways to improve our qc and one of those steps was going to a stamp system for each employee to mark parts as they handle them so should an issue arise we can go back and know who did it and correct it much quicker then before. We also now have implemented random inspections wehre both machined parts and completed parts are pulled off the finished line and taken apart for inspection. Hope this information helps and as always we are here to help if anyone has a particular issue.

The carburetor would have passed flow testing becasue when it is flowed at wide open throttle the same amount of fuel flows through the primary versus the secondary block.

It's definitly good to hear that your company has addressed the shavings issue's. It was getting kinda bad for a bit, however we still see a few roll through with small amounts in the bowls, but that could be attributed to old stock. The pumps and filters have always been a great mid level price alternative to Aeromotive and Magnafuel however.

Why don't you send it in and let us run it on the flow bench before you give up on it? If you decide to , make a copy of this thread and put it in the box with it .

negative. if you remember i have a long long thread going on camaros.net about this very subject. i bought mine new on ebay. then of course the carb sat for a year in my parts pile before i actually used it.

its already been taken apart and looked at by the carb shop. i buy a $600 carb, then pay $300 for the carb shop to look at it and i still have isues with an eratic idle.

set the idle at 900... rev it up... idles at 1200... get out of the car lightly press on the linkage... idle is back at 900... remove the return spring... idle shoots up to 1200 again.

go for a quick drive and pull up to a stop with a fast 1000+ prm idle.

its not fun. also, this thing needs to be tuned on a daily basis depending on how warm it is outside. im just over it.
