      Pro-Touring Mustang

      Hi all

I've lurked off and on here for about a year and a half, posted a time or two, gleaning information from these pages to use on my '68. My '68 was my daily driver, which kept me from doing a TOTAL resto/mod/PT makeover. Well, I recently bought an '02 Z06 for my daily driver, and now my thoughts are turning to a full scale, first class project. However, I want to jump out of my comfort zone (Chevrolet) and build a '67 Mustang fastback pro touring car, and basically, I don't even know where to start as far as planning this beast. Can any of you guys please point me in a good direction to start in? Any websites you know of that could help me? Suspension goodies? Manufacturers? Any and all help appreciated!!!

Take a look at the latest Hot Rod magazine. There's a nutso mustang in there. I really like that one.

Check out TCP as well, they make some nice stuff. I think Chris Alston took over their products now? Hopefully someone will have a current link to their site.

Thanks guys, now I have some questions about engines....mmm I love this, I feel like I have a blank canvas in front of me. I kinda have a 600 hp goal for this project, would a turbo 347 get me there? I've never done anything with turbos, and I'd like to do one on this project.
      Thanks again

I'm not sure about the turbo 347, but as another option to look into, you could get 600hp at the crank pretty easily with an '03+ Cobra drivetrain. A pulley, all bolt-ons, tuning and a few other things should get you there, or very close. If that 600hp goal is at the rear wheels, swap out the SC for a Kenne Bell, up the boost and you should get there as well. These engines take very well to mods from what I've been reading. I'm not sure how much these engines are selling for used, but I think an '03+ Cobra drivetrain would be awesome. Just another option .

Hmm, I have not thought of this. I know a little bit about the '03 and '04 Cobra motors having considered one before my Z06, but I had not thought about putting one in a classic Mustang. This sounds very interesting, as it would also easily meet my "late model reliability" goal. That post got me to thinking!! I couldn't imagine it being more $$ than a good turbo 347. I think I'll look into this!! Thanks Ralph!

Edit: I just realized that Year One did this swap into a '66 Mustang. Aren't '67 Stangs wider to accomodate a big block? That should make for an easier retrofit.

The SC Cobra engine is being used quite a bit lately,it takes the use of one of the front end kits but VERY nice way to go. BUT if you do go 347 make sure of what kit/short/long block you get, some 347's are very prone to useing oil.331,393 or 408 stroker Windsor may be better choices.

A front end kit? What type of "front end kit" does this take? I want more info lol. I feel like I'm cramming for an exam, because I'm trying to take in so much at once

the only way to really fit a 4.6 is to ditch the shock towers. but if you use the RRS front mcpherson strut conversion and their shock tower kit you can cram one in there, not much else in the way of aftermarket stuff will help other than a mustng II conversion, which is nowhere ideal for a corner carver, if you're going for more of street rod type car it will work fine though. but like i said unles you do some major surgery on the car it can't be done, and depending on whether or not you ever want to return the car to stock, if you do any of these types of kits to try and wedge a 4.6 in there you won't be able to. that said you might should look at a stroked 351w you can go as large as 414ci with a stock block and 454 or bigger with a good aftermarket block like ford preformance or dart/world products

Yeah, a good old pushrod is looking like the way to go. So would a turbo 351w meet my 600 fwhp goal? Should I go TT or single turbo? Thanks

I want this car for the money but....

      MY WIFE WOULD KIILLLLL ME!!!!
But it may be the perfect solution for you. I think the price is fair, allthough I haven't been shopping around, since the 67 Fastbacks are disappearing and pulling big money since the re-release of "Gone in 60 Seconds".

Ralph LoGrasso mentioned TCP. Total Control Products is the suspension company that the stunt designers used to beef up the "eleanors" for high performance driving in the remake of "Gone in Sixty Seconds". All of Carrol Shelby's reproduction Shelby GT500E's feature TCP. Here is another link to a story on the GT500E to see what else they used. Also check out www.sandersonsales.com whenever they get their new sited finished.

Not that I like the look of the Eleanors, but they are set up very well.

A bit off topic, but why do you call the 68 'maro 'Beauregard'?
That is my last name, and I don't see it often.

Hey you guys, this outpouring of information is amazing!! Right now, my rough, general plan is - (Please feel free to critique)

      -(Twin) Turbo 351w or 408
-GW, TCP or Griggs front suspension (should I go with coilovers or not? please share your opinion)
-Upgraded rear leaf suspension (Del-a-lum bushings, 2" drop, torque arm)
-17 or 18" Halibrand's or Magnum 500's (I like a "vintage" look to the exterior)
      -Nitto 555's
-C5 Corvette Seats (I've fallen in love with them for overall comfort/support), uphostered to match originals
-4 piston 13" brakes up front, 2 piston 12" brakes out back

      Thanks again

Oh and Tyler - I named my Camaro "Beauregard" because after being around the car for a while, I just felt it fit. When I name my cars, there's usually no rhyme or reason, just wahtever comes to me and seems to "fit" well. That said, I think Beauregard is a really cool name!!

re: GW/TCP/Griggs, I think there is rough consensus that Griggs is
the best -- but very pricey. TCP coilovers are nice, but they are
expensive too. some folks say that TCP is fine for a street car, but
only Griggs will do for racing. I went with GW UCAs for my Fairlane
(and not TCP coilovers), mostly b/c of the price.

A nice site with front & rear sub-frames for early mustangs:
