      Grand Cherokee Steering Box

      I want to use a Lee or DSE or ATS etc steering box but they are out of my budget. After reading here I found out several people are using the Jeep box, and that is probably more in line with my budget. I was wondering what year(s) I should be looking for. Thanks for all replys.

      93-98 Jeep Grand Cherokee box. works great. Bolts right in. reuse your power steering pittman arm. the line fittings are metric but you can get the low pressure adapter at a parts store. Not sure about the high pressure since I converted to a metric PS pump due to the LS swap. There is a thread on team chevelle about the swap.

      93-98 as stated, I paid less than $50 from the JY, then I ordered the rag joint and hose adapters from Lee.

      I got a '98 JGC box at a wrecking yard and had Tom Lee go through it. I installed it in my '65 Chevelle and I simply love it. It's quick and precise on windy back roads and very stable on the freeway. It was a straight bolt in and worth whatever it was that it cost me.       Keep in mind those that have a car with manual stearing you will have to buy the power stearing Pittman arm and the power stearing drag link. I did this on my 1965 Buick Skylark. As reported above there were no problems in the conversion.

      Spend a couple of bucks and get a rebuilt box from your local parts store. I'm all for saving a buck or two, but at least you know what you have when you put it in.

      OK so I found this and thought....maybe save some money.. Autozone lists a "Duralast" brand gear #7525. Looks to fit both grand and just the cherokee. They show it a 3.3 turns lock-lock, anyone know what the actual ratio of these boxes are? Somehoe that doesnt seem much quicker than stock.

      Use car-part.com to find the best price on a used one. I picked mine up for $50.

      and dont worry too much about how many fewer turns, I think the JGC box was 3/4 of a turn faster then the OEM 1972 bex, but my old one was leaky and sloppy.

      One more question. Is it doable for a DIYer to rebuild the box. I haven't seen any kits at the auto parts stores, was wondering if any of you have tried to rebuild your own.

      Even if it was possible.......I wouldnt try it. THe time/cost to rebuild yourself isnt worth it compared to just buying one. Same thing for brake calipers/etc......used to reduild my own years ago, but now to can buy one rebuilt with a warranty for less than the kits seemed to go for.

      Goy my used JGC gear at local yard...$45 from a 98 with only 69K miles....no need to even think of a rebuilt---this one should be good for another couple hundred thousand

      Yhe steering box adapters are available from Earls. Use a 1980 Camaro/Firebird steering coupler. It is cheaper. I got mine from NPD. Was a lot cheaper than the PU coupler.

      Is this the same recipe as for any 70's GM car? Want to do this on my 70 Camaro. Same Lares 202 Rag joint and everything to convert?
