I have a '69 Camaro street car with a 6.0L LY6 with a small cam, T56 with a 2.66:1 First gear, 4.10:1 Rear gear and 26" tire. If the car didnt already have that gear in it, I would probably have chosen a 3.55-3.73. First gear is virtually useless, 2nd gear doesnt even hook up with a 275 street tire past half throttle.

I have often thought a 3.89 (9") or 3.90 (12 bolt) would be a good choice with a T-56 esp for a car that is autocrossed and also run on a road coarse. Anything numerically lower like 3.73's or 3.55's puts the RPM range in 6th with a 26" tall tire under 1500 RPM in the 55-60 MPH range IIRC.

My car has 4.11's with the T56 - I can break the tires loose with ease in 1st and 2nd with a 275/35-18 tire. I plan to change mine to either 3.73 or 3.90 with the choice being driven by cost. I have found that 3.90 gear sets tend to be a bit more expensive than 3.73 and I'd rather err on the side of slightly too less gear than slightly too much. I have had problems hitting the rev limiter with my car with the 4.11's on the autocross with both my previous engine (LT1) and the current engine (LS1).

      Hopefully this helps!

I run a 500hp Lq4 t56 with 390 gear if you stand on it it will blow the tires in an instant also 315 bfg g force ta tire. I do alot of 1/8 mile racing I wish I would have done 373 cuz its toppin 3rd gear bouncin off the rev limiter goin thru traps.

I will be in close situation like this. I will swap 480hp version into bmw e36 coupe which have 3.23 diff, car weight 3250lb, tires 285/30/17". What I want is spin tires in second from 1000rpm. Is that possible in this setup? In US market is magnum t56 with two different ration, same is for used t56 from camaro with ls1 engine. Car is used more in city stop&go trafic. I want good overdrive for open road. Which ratio is better for me, one with shorter or longer first gear?

      thanks

with 3.23 the .50 6th might me more open road then you need... i would consider the .60 which would give you more 1sd and 2nd like you want.

I'm running heads/cam LS1, 410 to the tires, T56 & 4.10's. I originally bought my 12 bolt with 3.73s. All seemed ok with that gearing. However the gears whined so badly I talked them into a new set. I went with 4.10s on a whim. It made a big difference, really kept the motor in the powerband on each shift. The power was right there- it pulled hard thru 1st 4 gears under full throttle. Even seems easier to pull away from dead stop in normal driving. This may be just my setup- cam rpm range, less cubic inches, etc. Im running 335/35/17. With 3.73 it turned 1900 at 80mph, with 410 its at 2100 at 80mph. Still gets 25mpg on highway. I think 3.89 would work well. I personally would choose 3.73/3.89/4.11. Anything numerically lower than 3.73 I don't think you'd be happy with. With big inch torque motor or FI I could be see using a higher gear. Curious to see what you decide and drive the car. Scott

yea, you are right. I can always find shorter gear for diff and in this way "simulate" close gear ratio in tranny.
