Project Flying Moose 78' Volvo 242

Nice project. I have a 92 240 wagon as my DD. I see clean wagons every few months for reasonable prices. Following this with interest!

Two days well spent with a flurry of work. The 1991's engine and trans pulled and dropped into the 78' along with a strip of the 91's interior.





A little interior "cleaning"



The 91 was soooo clean we hated to tear it apart but we did a little measuring and didn't feel so bad, driver's frame rail=1.25" bent upwards, no wonder it looked like it was dog-tracking going down the road.


This week's project will be gutting the rest of the car and transplanting the newer style dash and wiring harness into the 78', I will be using every part I can from the donor including the newer style windshield. I also have a laundry list of small parts to get ordered for the suspension and air install.

Sent the donor to the crusher last Saturday after picking it clean


And the coupe has to suffer the same fate to be put back together....






And back together it goes....




Entire wiring harness, fuel system, coolant system, and brake system will be used on the coupe, I'll even have heated seats and air conditioning. I will be switching to a hydraulic e-brake due to the wheel studs hitting the factory system, this will also shave a few pounds off the rear end, which will also be swapped after a clean-up and bushing replacement. The front suspension will be modded for the airbags and will be bolted up in one piece.




The sooner I get the mess of parts from the donor on the coupe and out of the garage, the sooner I can start back on the LM7 harness and setting it up for twin turbos, that should be a fun winter project. ;)

I hate when life gets in the way of a good project!

Work that's been done since last:
Swapped out v8 front crossmember to stock 91. (Then finish welding for v8 conversion)
Installed new ball joints
Installed 91 steering rack and attached hoses
Reinstalled slam panel
Installed 23mm front sway bar with poly bushings and end links
Installed 91' rearend, wiring, and fuel system
Ordered hydraulic e-brake, fittings, and Wilwood prop valve(replumb crazy swedish brake system)

LM7 PCM and DBW goodies purchased here on pro-touring! Thanks 1976CamaroGuy! Almost the last parts needed for the LSX swap. New wheels are ordered.

Was going order from the guy of the boards but came across this pair for $250 on craigslist, saved a buck fifty.

Driver's seat mounted this morning using factory seat rails and two brackets. One thing I do wish was the car had a tilt wheel but it sits well.




Also my MOMO steering wheel adapter came in but I need to drop it off at the machinist to get it shortened, I want to run a 3" dished wheel and these are built for a flat wheel.

Finished the front seat install, both are bolted in and safe.



Then I moved on to some interior work, started dyeing the rear door panels black.



And wrapped the back deck in some black vinyl I had lying around.




Then mounted the one late model side view mirror I have, need to hit the yards for a passenger side



Also did some cleaning up of the floors, rear deck, and trunk in prep for paint and carpet.

Parts flying in, left and right. New E-code headlights and bulbs arrived today along with new wheels, while not big by pro-touring specs they are an easy fit without cutting for now or until fundage allows some cutom built wheels for the car. Volvo has the weird 5x4.25 pcd and even with adapters makes wheel selection difficult.

Very nice build. Love Volvo's. Check out Yoshifab. Makes some reasonably priced custom parts for the 240 series. Adjustable Torque Rods, rear trailing Arm Boxing Plates, Control Arm Box Plates, 240GT style strut tower/firewall braces, lower chassis braces. The front brake kit is really nice though. Right around $400.00 for a 4 pot upgrade.

I'm a member over on TB, yoshifab and kalphenke make some nice stuff for Volvos. I had considered the big brake upgrade but the weight it removes with the aluminum caliper it puts back on with the heavy rotor. I'll be raiding the wilwood catalog for my brake upgrade. ;)

Dropped off measurements at the machinist for the custom bushings I need to run the rod end arms and picked up this:



The factory MOMO hub was shortened 3" just to run a dished wheel. :thumb
