      Steering Column and Box

I have a 1969 Camaro that was originally an auto and is now a 6 speed manual. The steering column has a collar on it that if isn't in the right spot it doesn't let the key out of the column (i suppose it thinks that it is in drive). So I'm thinking it would be best to replace the column with a new one that is made for a standard. The price varies a lot from $200 on ebay to over $1000 for ididit and other brands.

What is the most common and recommended option for a new steering column? If I'm replacing it I'd like to get one that tilts.

Lastly, while going down a straight line I can sway the steering wheel left and right by about an inch or two and the car keeps travelling straight because there is that much play in it. I'm assuming that is the steering box that is causing that issue. I'd like it to be crisp without any play. What's the best replacement for that?

I bought a rebuilt tilt manual colum for my 70 Chevelle from this guy and could not be happier. Quality build GM parts fully disassembled painted and re assembled. Give him a call and see what he can offer. You won't be disappointed. Don cell# 727 580 4518 He is NO CA bu travels all over the US selling his re builds at big auto swaps.

what Rich said above. I have one of Jim's columns in my 68 Camaro and it's great. Well built, and good guy to work with. He is in Milton, Fl. He is a member here.

Thanks guys. Does the slop in the steering wheel sound like the steering box?

The box could certainly be a contributing factor, but don't overlook the other steering components like your tie rods, pitman and idler arms.

Do what is called a dry park test. Have a helper move the wheel back and forth through the travel of the play (with the engine off) while you lay under the car and observe the steering system. Look for any movement of one component before it moves the one it is attached to. This would indicate a worn component. They should all move together as one at the same time.

Don't actually turn the wheels, just shake the steering wheel back and forth exhibiting the play and look for loose components.

If the steering shaft turns a long ways before the pitman arm moves, then you know a good amount of play exists in the box itself
