      noise in engine

Had an LS1 installed in my 69 camaro...after it warms up(about 12-15 miles) I get a niose from the drivers side...the noise is mor of a knock then a tick, but sounds like valve train. The noise goes away after a couple minutes, but will return from time to time. If it is making the noise and I shut the car off and let her sit for a little bit, it goes away. I took it back to who built the engine, the thought it was a lazy lifter, so they replaced them...well noise is still there?? Any ideas?? Engine is an LS1, PRC heads, comp V2 cam, carbed...thanks in advance..

I had an intermittant noise in my engine and the sound was between a lifter tap and a knock. Turned out it was a broken timing chain guide on the slack side of the chain. I was hearing the chain slap.

In some of my recent times with my engine high rpm miss I ran into a thread that talked about piston wall slap on a cold piston causing a noise like you describe. But since you had your engine builder go over it and if you believe he didn't hit or miss a cylinder when doing some machining then I would definately consider Brain's input a lot. The LS engines are new to a lot of builders to make it a new learning curve for them to remember every little detail when assembling them and if I was new at it I would think it would be very easy to install the guide and forget to tighten it because you are probably looking for the right wrench long enough to see something you need to not forget to do also and grab it instead of the wrench you need. It happens to the best of us.

Good luck and if it turns out to be something strange let us all know, sometimes these things really take fixing other things to find the real culprits.

The LS engines will sometimes lose the needle bearings out of the rocker arms .
      Check your rocker arms.
The needles may also end up in your oil pan .

What pistons are in it? The stock ones are noisy until they get warmed up, sometimes even after that.

I am now at 450 miles on it, changed the oil, changed the lifters, but the noise is still there...only after about 20 miles, then it comes and goes...the engine builder only works on LS engines.....He is out of town due to a death in the family, but he did mention he wants to look at the rockers...on another note...I did stand on it tonight a little bit...Holy cow!!! She is a monster..next year magnacharger!!!

Is it louder when the motor is under load? Could just be a leaking exhaust gasket.

My builder should have listened to me. We tried another set of LS7 lifters, he was sure it was a lifter. Then He tried a set of lunati's, still noise. By this time i
I am getting a little ticked off. Back in July I mentioned to him that I thought it might be a valve spring. He maintained that there is way. Well, I ordered a set from Texas Speed...guess what, no noise! Now I am a happy camper!
