I hope that when Bana rebuilt his car this time around that he took Leno's words to heart. In the movie Leno told Bana that he wouldn't have smashed up the car if he had worked on it and I totally agree. When you put your hard work, sweat, and effort into a car, you are much more careful with it than if you had simply written a check.

This of course has nothing to do with the original topic, so carry on....LOL

But this is part of the topic in an odd way. IMHO, Bana did it the right way... build it, beat on it, and if it breaks or you wad it up, (re)build it better. This should especially be true for cars we can now get complete chassis for. I get "collector" cars, but I'm not one much for owning a car I can't (afford to) or won't drive, maybe because I'm not privileged enough to be able to do that sorta thing. Leno drives his car, but even he'll admit that he seldom drives 'em in anger or takes 'em to the track... he's just a different kinda car guy that way.

A bit off topic yes but I want to respond to this since I strongly disagree with you on yet another of the "check writer car guy" comments.

Since you watched the movie, you know that Bana and his friends wrenched on that car from the beginning and continued to upgrade it and add to it, even with their underskilled abilities. Then one day Bana gets deep in the pocketbook, so he pays a skilled builder to build his car .... CORRECTLY and with skill and precision. Something he cannot do. What's wrong with that? It was a purpose built car.

As to your "more careful because you put your own sweat bla bla bla" comment, that's hogwash. I know countless examples of guys who had someone build their car who are so damn tentative and scared to drive it. And then there are many who personally built and beat the holy shiat out of their cars and are not what anyone would call "careful" with them. Many of these examples are right here on this forum and Lat G.

You can clearly tell Bana is a competitor and Leno is not with regard to actually running a car hard. Big difference there that is relevant.

As it's been said here before... there are owners and drivers.

IMHO, it matters not to what degree you 'built' or 'bought' it. And it matters not how much you're worth or your celebrity status in regards to that process.

The only thing I have a lack of respect for is the hating on someone else based on those shallow, superficial judgments or preconceived notions.

A major structural suspension failure can be a tough thing to overcome mentally... a friend of mine built a car himself, and then through no fault of his own, experienced a balljoint failure. It was always on his mind when he drove it after that, and he just couldn't enjoy the car anymore. Even after changing the whole front suspension, he always had that uneasy feeling driving that car. He sold it, moved on, and built another car.

Suspension is kind of important... keeps the wheels on the car.

Maybe. Then again you have a biased opinion and so do I. As you said, there are examples on both sides of the issue.

Exactly. Ridiculous blanket statements are just that... ridiculous.

Rogan freely admits that he never wanted the Cuda in the first place. He only built it because the producer of Rides is a friend of his, and asked him to participate in the show. Im a old member on the Rogan Board.

      Here's the relevent quote:

Fdawgthat's a nice deal you got there...did you call them or did they call you? how does that all work?

JoeRogan Actually my friend Bud is the executive producer, so he asked me to do it.
He lives right down the street from me, I sold him my old house.
I never even thought about buying a hot rod until he showed me a copy of the pilot. We've been talking about doing it for about 6 months.

I'm surprised the builders didnt know better w/ that magnum force stuff. I mean there are people who have luck using it in drag racing, but its an awful idea for PT.

He explains what happened, and said Steve Strope fixed it, then he sold it.

I don't think the full story has been told, but what's just as irresponsible is to discount the owner as some ignorant checkbook hotrodder and call him a "pendejo".

The guys car had a massive failure and is lucky that it happened in the driveway instead of the highway, and somehow people want to lay into him first because he's supposedly a "rich celebrity".

The whole story needs to be told, he could have took it somewhere else for something? I certainly didn't start this thread to blame any builder.. and from the vid it doesnt even sound like Joe is doing that either.

No, I think in the case of Joe Rogan, it's perfectly OK.

      Well said as always Bret.

But that's kind of like having someone else playing your guitar with skill and precision, that's great, but it's not as cool as when you get to the point where you can do the same thing. And you'll never get there if you keep handing your guitar off.
Hey, if you don't have the time, you don't have the time, but I think the disconnect here is that some people see this as relatively the same thing, if you don't take the time to do it yourself and learn the skills, you're missing out on part of the fun.

This thread has derailed so it's my last post. Your analogy is invalid. If you talked about the BUILDER of the guitar, then it would make some sense. Because the owner could then play the guitar. So a guitar player is supposed to learn how to skillfully build a guitar like a craftsman? Come on. Some people like to build cars (guys that spend 3-5 years building a car, then immediately sell it) and some like to drive. Some both.

      Hey, that's a good point!
I guess it's just that in this hobby the builders and the "players" rub shoulders a lot more, so this inevitably comes up.
There's really TWO hobbies, they're just interrelated.
