MSD 6al problems

I installed a msd 6al a while back and when I went to start the car the msd box started to smoke, I quit trying after that and just went back to the hei I had before. Is that normal for them to smoke when starting to use them? Is there a way to test the box to see if it is still good? Thanks Ty

My MSD 6AL Box makes a slight buzzing noise , which varies with Engine RPM , but has never yet smoked on me. I would guess that is not normal.
