      406 torquer track day engine.

just thinking out loud.....I have this 406 with dished pistons stock bottom end, 80s Corvette alum heads that I was going to put in my truck.....but I was thinking about an engine for the Chevelle track day car.....

I am a believer that you can do very well with torque on a roadrace course....so I was thinking...what if I was to go with a really good set of heads like some Brodix or AFRs or whatever, intake and carb to match and build it as a torquer 406 and keep the stock bottom end....pump gas engine......

anyone have any input on that type of set up and what kind of numbers you might be able to get????

I've got one of those desk top dyno's. Put a scenario together and I'll run it.

I did a similar build with my old 400 SBC build

      Stock bottom end
      Block decked
      ~10.2:1
      AFR 195
      Vic Jr intake
holley 650 dbl pmp mech sec
comp cams xtreme energy 4x4 grind (similar to this http://www.summitracing.com/parts/CCA-08-411-8/)

This motor ran great. It was a stump puller at low RPM's but still had some RPM range to it. It was a budget build and probably made ~450hp.

was it a smooth idle?....how high did you rev it?

Smooth idle yes, I ran the jetting low on primary side so it was slighly lean at idle. But was smooth.

I had the rev limiter on the 6al set to 6,200 and did bounce it from time to time but got flat around 5800.

      Smooth idle is for pussies.

Check out a Comp XR286 solid roller. It's what your engine wants once you put AFR 210s on it, which is what it's asking for. Top it with an Air Gap and a good ~700cfm carb and enjoy yourself.

You can alway run an X pipe with a set of spintech mufflers. Smooth but very different sounding idle.

Scott is right. I left my old set up for the bigger AFR's / Vic Jr / solid roller / 6" rod / KB pistons / splayed 2 bolt / decked / line bored / which = RPM and HP but at at some $$$$$$$$$$$$ (you get the point)

Here is thread that had some good info on different 400 combo

I guess I should have mentioned this but this will be a "get the car rolling" budget kind of engine hooked to a street T-10 that I have kicking around before I get my "real" engine (600ish hp) with a "real" trans like a Jerico or something so I dont want get carried away with the 406 with a new crank and rods and everything else.

the "real" engine plans however are now totally up in the air, I had originally thought of an ex Busch SB2 (700hp and the motor mounts and dry sump system are already in the car) and a Jerico but Steve Rupp and these guys are getting some very impressive numbers from their LS1s or whatever they are and they run on pump gas which is VERY attractive to me and cant be ignored.......D

I run a 406 based on a 71 400 block on the road course. Not exactly a budget engine but you might enjoy the specs for comparison

      Milodon 4 bolt caps
      Scat 3.750" forged crank
      Manley forged rods
SRP 4.155" pistons with slight dish
      Canton Road Race pan
      Crower 236 hydraulic roller
World Sportsman II 200cc iron heads with 64 cc chambers and mild porting (bowl blend, port match and a shine job)
      10.5:1 CR
      2.055" x 1.600" valves
      Crower SS rocker arms
      Victor Jr.
      750cfm carb
      1-7/8" full length headers

Output is roughly 1.2 HP per cube and I rev it to 6700 rpm in 1:1. If you will be running any road courses with min 1000 foot straights--which is most of them, you need to rev the engine. And you will need to rev it over and over again. Otherwise you might find yourself running out of engine and slowing prematurely.

When you give me set up need your exhaust set up also. Solid roller is best for road course but you should at least get something that pulls to 6500. As far as lobe seperation, I like between 108 and 110. Victor Junior is good choice for intake and I wouldnt run anything smaller than 750 double pump. With a 406, 190 AFR's would be fine and give you more bottom end. Definitely need road race pan.

I ran desk top dyno with that set up and showed 458 hp at 6000 and 423 torque at 5000

well, Schoenfield chassis headers, do you need header primary and collector sizes?.....other than that it would go to this set up which is 3"..... overkill I know but it will bolt right up and it came with the car.
