XR4TI. 2 door, hatchback, IRS RWD, turbo, cheap, fun, good handling, eats up the highway, addictive, and 10 times more family friendly than nearly any other 2 door hatch. Seriously. The rear seat is properly decently sized for even adults. Fits two kids with room to spare. Hatch + fold-flat rear seat means huge hauling ability. 2.3 Lima motor is cheap and easy to get parts for. There's plenty of parts suppliers and support. Kids love it... especially with the BOV! Pic for support:

I had a saturn SC1 w/ a twin cam swap, and that was a fun quick little car. although hardly any aftermarket support, they are fun and reliable stock; IMO the gear ratios were just about perfectly spaced. 124hp and 2200lbs is a good combo.
me personally, I'm waiting until later this year for the US intro of the Mazda2.

Yea, I had a GTi as well, and I agree, it was a blast.... until i drove a sporty rwd. that's just my personal opinion though.
