      External wastegate vs. Internal

I am currently setting up a twin turbo and my turbos have internal wastegates. I was thinking of changing them over to external. Is there a benefit of changing these over or should I stay with the internal? If anyone also knows what is required to do this. i know I will need the block off plates, new waste gates, and wastegate tubes. I am under the impression the tubes will mount to the headers. Am I right with all of this? Any help is appreciated. Thanks

The advantage to external would be size, control, and looks. External gates can give you more control for low boost or boost controler, because you can use much larger size gates. They also can be put just about anywhere for the proper look. Here are two rides I have done. You can see how freedom of placement helped me on the looks, and symmetry.

I like the twin turbo mustang, that is how my twin turbos on my 67 camaro are. The turbos I have are internal but I think I am going to which over. I may run the internal for a while and switch over. If I knew how to post pics on here I would post some of my mine project and see what you guys thought and see if there is anything I need to change. I have 57mm turbos what size wastegates should I buy?

This kind of sounds backwards, but if you plan to always run a good amount of boost you dont need big wastegates. If you want to be able to run low boost 3-5 lbs you will need larger gates.

I plan on running around 10 psi. What is backward about it me going to external? If the internal will work fine I will just stay with them. I am kind of new to the turbo stuff and this is my first build so I am still trying to learn everything.

No i was meaning big gates for low boost and small gates for high boost was what sounds backwards. I always support an external gate setup.

So with a 57mm turbo and running around 10-12 psi what size wastgate would you recommend?

57mm turbo is not going to be big enough If you do run it you will need to go with a large A/R on the turbine side. I would say atleast .96 or larger. I would also go with atleast a 60mm wastegate. The red mustang I posted above is a 306 and I started off with a 61mm turbo with a .68 A/R housing on the turbine, and even though it worked you could tell the small turbine housing was holding it back in the upper RPM range. I upgraded to a 70mm turbo with a .96 housing and it made a huge difference. The turbo would light almost instantly and never seem to quick making power. Boost for both turbos was controled by the 60mm wastegate pictured.
