      question

If I have a rod knock, will the noise be constant?

I'm debating pulling my motor completely or just pulling the oil pan to wiggle the rods to see for sure.

I have a noise that sounds like another collapsed lifter, but I'm tired of chasing ghosts.

A mild rod rod knock will race with the engine RPMs, mostly on decel. Sound like a really bad lifter.

      Thanks, Frank.
No bad lifter, for sure. I just stripped the engine down and all the new lifters look awesome. I had installed a new cam and lifters this spring after I found 2 collapsed lifters before and a lobed cam. With the new cam, the same noise was still there and I assumed the new cam hadn't broken in properly. This tick seems to only happen under acceleration. It is not at all present during idle or even slow speeds.

So I'm just going to pull the whole motor and give it a once over. I drained the oil and there was a metal shaving and black paste-like substance sticking to the magnet on the oil pan drain. I'm taking that as a bearing. At any rate, at least I'll have more room to work on it with the motor out of the car.
