      L98 Questions

Guy's was looking at this L98 on ebay and had a few questions about it,58x ignition would this work if I wanted to run a turbo 350 trans, water pump and dampner are the same offset as c5 c6 vette is the norm for a L98 crate engine, oil pan is 8 quart used in pontaic G8 and holden commadore,I'm sure this would have to be changed because it's going in a 69 camaro, one last thing does not have DOD(displacement on demand) not sure what this is and does it matter.I guess in a nut shell I'm looking for the same engine you would get from Scoggin Dickey,I'm wanting to use the accesory drive and wiring harness from GM Performance Parts with this motor also. The only reason I'm looking on Ebay because there doesn't seem to be many of these engines around and at $4500.00 doesn't seem like a bad deal but I would much rather use a sponsor here but it seems like the L98's are about sold out.THANKS!

I am a little confused on your questions.

I thought the L98 is an older Vette engine from the 80's & early 90's, maybe the F bodies too. Nothing on it is the same as the C5 C6 vette parts or the Pontiac G8.

      Not true - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GM_LS_engine#L98

I wish GM wouldn't reuse the engine model designations - gets very confusing. I hate looking for LS7 parts and coming up with 454 parts that are 30+yrs old LOL.

These L98 engines are a 6.0L LS2 variant with the better L92 heads and intake, no DOD (a good thing IMO). They are a complete crate motor and I think they are a great deal. I know Frank had some for sale at one time so check with him first. If nothing local you can get a killer deal importing one of these yourself with the current exchange rate. But my preference would always be to buy from a local sponsor like Frank.

I was about to buy one for myself and ended up going with a local LS7 deal. In Australia they were used in the VE and other model Holdens. If you cannot find one locally - PM me - I had a deal set up including shipping etc' but that was a few months back and not sure if there are any left.

Going back to your actual questions - I don't see a reference to the Ebay item you mean but I have seen most of them. I will just say that there is no one "flavor" of the L98. They were fitted to several different models and as far as I know, they came with several different oil pans for the different configurations - many with the front-sump pans (ie: no good for your FBody setup). My research showed you had just as many options as the LS2 since the block was essentially the same so find a local FBody pan/pickup and run that. As for the front accessory setup - I hate to think. Like all LSx setups - there are many options and configurations. I'm dealing with that now with the LS7 in the FBody (easy if you just want to run factory setup but aftermarket frame, wanting to run a/c down low etc......)

      G.
I checked it last week; there were still a few available in Australia for around AUS $4500,- (yes sir, that's less than USA $3000,-!).

I've got one and was able to use the 98-02 Fbody frontdrive accessories.

What intake manifold is used on the L98? Is it the LS3 intake?

Thanks! These seem like a great deal/option! Any downfall to using them? Other than it's a 6.0 not a 6.2?

Haven't found one yet! It's like having an LS3 with just slightly less c.i. (364 vs 376, 4.000 vs 4.060!) for an absolutely fantastic price. When you would like to read more about this engine, I would advise to go to: www.ls1.com.au (Australian site).

Thinking about it a little more; when the regular camshaft is in and you want another one, you also have to convert the timing chain set from 1 bolt to 3 bolt. At least on some of the L98's. Now, I bought my engine with the cam already swapped out and have only read about it but even if you have to that, it's still a bargain IMO.
