      DIY Engine Coatings

I've read and re-read Steve Rupp's build-up of the 87 octane engine and seen a lot of good from the engine coatings he used. But all of them were applied by a professional shop. Main drawback I can see is expense.

I've seen a company that sells any type of the engine coating you apply yourself at home. Think these would be any good? I know the cost is a lot easier on my pocketbook if they are worth it.

Is this worthwhile in a daily-driven street engine? I'd like thought and ideas on this.

      Thanks

You could always try one of them on a part and see how easy it is to apply correctly.
A lot of the time it is getting the product on properly that is the biggest issue and the reason you may want to go with a professional.
Of course, this may be easy enough, or you may be meticulous enough to get it all right.

Anybody else have anything to add? Good or bad experiences? If it's not any good I need to know so I don't kill my engine before I build it.

      Anyone?

Fast01 that is the exact brand I had in mind. Care to elaborate on what you used, how you applied, and anything else to care to add?

Anybody else? I am getting ready to rebuild my 383 and can't afford to get things wrong, or to waste unneeded money either.

Sorry for not getting back to you sooner, but I'm not on here all that often. Anyway, I used this, http://www.techlinecoatingswebstore....1&product=1314 this, http://www.techlinecoatingswebstore....1&product=1312 and this http://www.techlinecoatingswebstore....1&product=1315

I followed their instructions exactly and am very happy with the results. Of course my wife wasn't happy about car parts baking in the oven! I coated the valve faces, combustion chamber and exhaust ports with the ceramic. I coated the valve springs, and valve stems with the liquid DFL and the valve guides with the powder DFL. I would've done the bearings and piston tops as well, but the short block was already assembled when I decided to give this stuff a try. Hope this helps!

I have always wondered how long these types of coating would last on a street motor. Race motor I could understand since it is torn down and rebuilt all the time you could reapply the coatings, But on a street motor, I wonder how they wear?

I feel like such an IDIOT!!!

Sorry, Scott, it was you who did the story on the engine coatings that I was thinking of. Sigh..... Sorry...

I've read sooo many engine build-ups trying to get my 383 optimized for the street that it gets confusing as to who did what, and eventually all that information overload becomes one jumbled mess in my mind.

      My sincerest apologies Scott!

Do you think the at home coating would be comparable to the professionally applied coatings? Would it be worth the time and cost for a street engine?

I've looked into Calico Coatings and if I'm not mistaken they do the application on your parts. I know their products are good and worthwhile. That's already been tried and proven. Unfortunately, I'd don't have their costs available in my budget. That was the reason I was inquiring about the Techline coating products and if a DIY'er could acheive comparable results and if it would be worth it on a daily driven street engine. I can afford the coatings and I'm fairly positive I can apply them myself in a dedicated oven.

Is it worth the time and trouble for a street engine? Anyone had any horror stories comcerning the at-home applied coatings coming off and destroying their engine? Those were the questions I was concerned about.

      Thanks.
