Moving a car!

I am trying to get my car shipped from OK to CA. The military is shipping me out there and won't pay for it to be moved. It looks like it's going to cost me about $1000 to $1300. Is that about right? Or does anyone know any other way of getting a car moved for cheaper? Thanks for all the help in advance.

I paid $1700 to have my car shipped from Las Vegas, to NY, so your figures sound about right. The car did not run, or steer under its own power, but the company I dealt with was great, and did not charge extra. Most of the other companies did. I think their name was Autobahn transportation? You may want to check with them and see what they quote you. Open transport will probably be cheaper than enclosed. Autobahn is enclosed.

I also paid $1000 to have my truck shipped from Minnesota to NY, and that was open transport.

I have used a shipper three times before. I shipped an el camino from california to florida not running for $600. I also shipped a 68 cutlass from southern cali to northern for $200 and a 94 impala from california to florida for $550. I will get you the shippers number tomorrow. They are very reliable and only take about 3-5 days. I havent recieved a complaint from them yet.

I got my mustang and camaro shipped from NM to TX for 1300, it would have been cheaper if the camaro ran.

Damn thats alot, hey Ryan,I got an idea...I wanna buy a 24 ft enclosed trailer but its out in Tennesse, pick it up for me and you can use it to get your car out here....i'll even pay for gas?

Ryan....this might be a stupid question but, why don't you just rent a trailer from U-Haul and tow it out there yourself? You could do OK to CA in 2 days. When you get there you just drop the trailer off at the nearest U-haul station and be done with it. Or are there other circumstances like time away from the base or not having a truck? Just an idea, it would be a lot of work but would save you a ton of money.

U-haul is only going to rent you a trailer (not a dolly) if you have a big ass truck, like a 1 ton. Some dealers will not rent you a trailer at all unless you rent their truck.

Very true BTDT... U haul will only rent you a trailer if your tow vehicle is a certain size compared to the vehicle youre towing. Before I bought my trailer I used U haul to tow my Syclone to the track with and they wouldnt rent me a trailer when my tow vehicle was an 89 short bed reg cab 2wd chevy pick up but a when I traded for a 90 LONG bed 2wd reg cab they had no problme with it. Basically they have a "cheat sheet" that they go by which states which vehicles can tow what when using one of their trailers.

1300 bucks sounds about right IMO as it cost me ~$1000 to have the dually in my sig shipped from CA to my door step in VA right before the last big gas price jump a couple years ago.

Do the math on what itd cost to go through Uhaul vs what itd cost to have it shipped for you while adding in the aggravation, time, extra expenses of doing it with U haul. With a shipper THEY are responsible for the vehicle as well as the aggrevation of traffic, tolls, meals, etc so IMO it will prolly be cheaper to contract it out to a shipper.

BTW, the accident insurance that U haul likes to sell you on their trailers is only good for $10k and their price to replace the trailer if you total it in an accident is $5k so that leaves you a whopping $5k to cover the vehicle you were towing. If something happens with one of the private shippers they will likely have enough ins that you wont be out any or very little money.

Closed trailer in Tennessee may not be such a crazy idea. Kill a bunch of birds with one stone, and members helping members is allways a good thing. Depending on the size of the trailer you might even be able to fit some of your personal items in with the car.

Yeah, that's the primary problem. I am moving myself out to CA. So I am going to get a UHaul to jam all my crap in. I have a Silverado 1500 so towing a little bit of stuff isn't too big of a deal. The enclosed trailer is a good idea, except for the fact that it's a ways away from me. I have to leave on Friday to get to my base on time and I already have 30+ hours of driving ahead of me, alone. SoCal, did you find that number for that company you use? Thanks for all the help so far.

If the vehicle runs, pay a freind to drive out there with you and fly him back home when you get there. I did this for my sister-in-law a couple of years ago when she moved from Ohio to Florida. Much cheaper than finding a shipper. You could always use the "I'm in the military and there's a war going on" guilt card to talk people into it. Good luck man, and thanks for our freedom!
