AutoZone or the like may have one. It's a 26 spline tool. Or it may be 28 splines. I want to say 26.

Call Quarter Master and order a real alignment tool. Not some plastic donkey richard POS from the parts store.

You really don't need a great alignment tool like Andrew showed you unless you are installing a newer tranny. With the tight bellhousing tolerance and roller bearing it has to be perfect. ON the older trannies with bushings, it's not perfection.

This is true, but that tool is not very expensive, and boy does it make it nice.

That is not an alignment tool, that is a spare input shaft!

      That thing is sweet.

      Oh yeah- T56 =26 splines.

Andrew: Nice find! I took one look at the picture and opened another window in my browser to order one.

Having pulled and reinstalled my T56 about eight times over the last four years and having had problems with the "parts store plastic piece" about 7 of those times, I'm very happy Andrew mentioned the Quartermaster alignment tool.

Call me crazy, but when my own experience confirms what three posters with over 10,000 posts among them are saying, I'm going to go with my own experience and the guys with the 10,000 posts, rather than the person with 4 posts.

      As always, YMMV.

Cheepo plastic tools can work but they are not as accuarte as using a cut off input shaft as an alignment tool.
This Quartermaster piece looks very nice - I called Quartermaster to find out more - it is not a cut off input shaft rather it is a custom made piece to tight tolerances.
We currently use a an old input shaft for our installs but I will be buying one of these tools to check it out. We may end up recommending this tool as a great option to make the clutch install job and therefore the transmission installation job easier.

I lined mine up by eye with the pressure plate loose, stabbed the transmission in there, wiggling it to get it to go in the pilot bushing. Then I carefully pulled it out and tightened up the PP.

This only worked because I had the transmission suspended from an engine lift with the body off. I could make the transmission any angle I want and move it smoothly. I don't think this would have worked underneath a car with a tranny jack.

      Hi,
can someome give me a link to this aligning tool in the pic please. As I have tried to GOOGLE Quarter Master an find it links to www.racingclutches.com , but when i try that link it does not find anything.
I need to buy one of these tools to help me set up a twin disc clutch for a GM Holden T56 gearbox.

I know a old input shaft is the go but finding one of those over here is as rare as rocking horse dodo.

      Thanks for any help.

      Cheers

      Deek
