spherical shifter rods

a while back hotrodtv showed a racing tranny with a trick shifter.
the shifter had hefty threaded rods and spherical rod ends.
the setup seemed super heavy duty and just rock solid.

the question is how would this last on the street?
and where do I start researching this type of mod for a
hurst/muncie combo?
I'm afraid I already know I gonna be on my own on this one
but without any experience with these type components I
don't really know where to start.
