then i took out the starter and it spins up fine pops out and everything put it back in without shims still made a grinding noise but then stopped and then lotsa smoke... the negative ground to the motor and the positive lead to the starter are both cookin.... Motor isnt seized..and it won't start even with the clutch in. I got not clue.. Any ideas?

how fast is it turning, have you tried turning engine by hand to if it's not tight.

Make sure the area on the block where the starter contacts it is clean with no paint. The starter grounds into the block, and if it has paint on it, it will cook the paint off until it gets a good ground. I had this problem too. Smokes real bad, doesn't want to turn the motor, and kills a battery pretty fast.

check the connections (- and +) at the engine and battery for tightness and corrosion.
you'll also want to take the starter to a rebuilder so they can do a load test. mine did something similar. it was a new starter but only lasted about a dozen cranks. it had no problems off the car but it would bake itsself when trying to turn the engine.
work in progress--for the next 10 years.
