About to lose fuel pump?-1999 Suburban

I have not noticed any issues yet with hard starts, but my gas gauge suddenly began jumping around this morning. The needle swung far to the right, well past full, then flipped back quickly to 1/4 tank were it remains but is flittering quickly. This is the first time it has done anything like this. Several restarts have produced similar results.

Some quick web research points to fuel pump replacement being the fix? Is there any way to test the pump to determne it's bad? I hate to spend another weekend working on the Suburban, especially if it isn't the true problem. But I alos do not want to end up stuck somewhere with a truck that won't start. Advise?
