      faceplating

Can someone help me out with more info on this modification. I sorta know about it but am not 100% certain on how it works and why it's done. Thanks

What exactly do you want to know? I have faceplated T56 in my RX7. No synchros. Personally I would not have it any other way. Its cluncky, super fast shifting, raw, loud, brutal, awesome.

haha sounds like it may be what I want. I'm just thinking that when I finally get around to building my TA that I would end up in the trans upgrading it with steel shift forks and bronze sliders. I was just curious to know how faceplating works, is it street drivable since this car will be on the street 99% of the time, what what negatives does it have. Really just general info on it and whether I should even think about it for me and my build. Thanks Andrew

What is streetable to some is not to others. Some guys drive with crazy cams on the street and call that streetable. This is sort of the same deal.

      Here are some good pictures:

      http://www.5speeds.com/racing/jt5rc.html

Basically instead of synchros there are dog rings. They offer a much wider window of engagement. So you basically shift the transmission as fast and as hard as you can. Taking it easy can result in glinding of the dogs. So just grab the next gear.

I can drive it as smooth as silk on the street. It just takes a bit of practice. After a while you learn how to match the RPM and it just slips effertlessly into the next gear while cruising around. For downshifts you have to blip the throttle and match RPM. A lighter flywheel and clutch definitely help when it comes to this kind of transmisison.

I guess if you have any specific questions, thats all I got for you now.

Oh, I expected it to be pushing the limits on streetability. I just wasn't sure if it physically was designed to be driven on the street with the constant up shifting and down shifting. I rev match as it is now so I am used to that on down shifts. What I was always told with faceplating was that it was great for drag racing because you just kept your foot into it and yanked on the shifter. Is that about right? I was thinking it would be pretty neat to have since the car will be more a toy than driven all the time. I also thought it might come in handy if I wanted to ever road course the car.

On mine, for a full power shift, I put a little pressure on the shifter while keeping full throttle. When I am ready to shift I tap the clutch pedal as fast as I can and it will just pop right into the next gear. Fairly instant.

It's just like Andrew said, raw and racey. You can shift the trans quietly with practice. The trans will let those hardcore gearheads know your car is serious, and will make the every day driver people think you can't shift or that your trans is blown up.

Mine is sold right now, I just have to take it out. I decided to go back to standard because I can only use the faceplating in 4th gear. Any other gear will bounce the motor off the limiter when I shift and I have to let off the gas.

I have to lift to shift because of the too much power not enough tire thing. So with that said, it is almost useless for me. I decided to go back to a "cheap" standard shifting trans for this reason.

Do you guys even use the clutch for up shifting when you were just driving around normally?

About how much does it cost to do to a T56?

Liberty will charge you about 1400 bucks if you send in a T56 in good working order. However, keep in mind that there are usually other issues that need to be fixed or upgraded.

Don't take that number as gospel. Your best bet is to call Liberty and talk to Paul.

Your also using a G-force trans not a T56. The faceplated mod on the T56 uses the stock gears. I think that it the reason they do not recommend shifting without the clutch.

      Thanks for the video.

With all this talk about what it's like, I forgot to verify it could handle the power I will make. So with the upgraded forks and sliders, 450-500 rwhp shouldn't be a problem should it?

      Thanks

Power handling will be the same as a normal T56 since the gears are stock. So yes, about 450-500RWHP should be right, assuming a car weight of 3500lbs, give or take.

Thanks Andrew. I figured I would be ok, but I don't trust what advertisments say about power handling.

Power handling claims are very tricky. The major variables include not just torque, but also traction and the weight of the vehicle. The same engine and trans in a lighter car will handle a lot more power. Heavy cars + big power + good traction = broken parts.

That's very true. Unlucky for me the one time I did weigh my TA it was sitting at 3800 and change lbs. Granted that is with the olds 403 in there. I know the 6.6 liter gen 3 I plan for it will help drop that weight significantly, but it's still a heavy car.
