My take on all this sports hype is that the ones who should be getting paid the most money are the ones that make differences in the world that are benifitial.

      -Police
      -Fire fighters/ paramedics/ EMS etc.
-Ofcourse the Military, god bless them.

As for these so called bs "heros" and ther multi-million dollar paychecks, they can kiss my ass, they dont know the meaning of hard work to make a change in anything they do. They carelessly spend there money on meaningless things, i know i shouldn't have any say about how a person spends there money, but when they spend the amount of money that could help thousands rather then 1, that is very selfish.

And i know that its the public why these guys are getting paid what they are, and that is another reason why i see this country going no where. Because when it comes down to whats neccessary, we americans have our head so far up our ass to care about the bigger issues at hand, like the war right now.

Sorry but i just had to rant about this, i have no respect for any sports athletes that dont give for a greater cause.

And if anybody out there thinks i dont give back, Im training to be a Police officer and SWAT medic like my dad.

And True, as much as I hate to admit it, yes, the man's acheivements and his personality/views should be seperated. Perhaps the Disney line struck a nerve with me being a parent.
I have to disagree, one man can not win a baseball game, a batter can hit 10 homers in a game, but if the pitcher(s) give up 11, they lose. Also, basketball begin a team sport, come on, Koby Bryant is the Lakers, without him they would be about 50 points behind the other team and lets not forget Micheal Jordan, this list could go on for days.

Badvelle, you're picking out extraordinary circumstances.....the rarities of the sport where as 6'9"witha69 is making his point on a more general basis.

I guess it's a difference in whether you think "collaboration" has to play a part in "Team". I would say it does, and that Baseball has much less of this than the other sports he listed.

Not what the news article said..

Even if he does not sell the ball, Murphy would still owe the taxes based on a reasonable estimate of its value, according to John Barrie, a tax lawyer with Bryan Cave LLP in New York. Capital gains taxes also could be levied in the future as the ball gains value, he said.

      I could be wrong though,

I would recommend some of you watch the documentary, "Ghosts of Flatbush". It chronicles an era (circa 1941-’57; focused primarily on the Brooklyn Dodgers) when baseball was something resplendent and the players were still venerable individuals.

And for the record, baseball is the greatest game known to man. Also for the record: you can take steroids until your nuts are the size of raisins and not be able to hit a home run in the big leagues.

ps. I don't condone Bonds' actions, and find his whole persona distasteful. But hey, my guy Griffey (I'm a Reds guy since the 60s) isn't the nicest guy either. Word is he's clean, and it's clear Bonds isn't. Steroids make a difference. But they don't take you from zero to 756.

I have been out of High School for 16 years. I recently found out my Friends were on roids while we were in School. The coach of Football would supply them to people with potential. I was not into it, I had a Ninja600! So I was never approached. Back then they said amino acids? Yea right 65 pounds in three months, plus an attitude?

We had many state champion wrestlers; needless to say. Steriods are evil, but they make you super human as far as speed and strength. The took my friend 165 to 225 in 3 months, he could bench 130 before, 385 after.

So I would say steriods make a very unfair advantage? IMO

yes, and even the extraordinary cases are not as they seem to be.

Yes, but if the pitcher has a no hitter, nobody else has to do anything defensively. VERY one sided. And offense is 100% individual effort.

Probably not, if didn't hog the ball others would get more shots in.

He had Pippen doing a lot of setup and assisting. He was great because he worked with people (mainly Pippen) to get the job done.

Not so fast. That was the time when all the power was held by the owners and commissioner. Player salaries were not negotiable beyond what the owner wanted to pay. The only option a player had was to quit. See reserve clause and Curt Flood for more information. One might argue that in today's sport, the players hold too much power, but they've got decades of artificially low salaries to catch up with.

Jesus Christ everyone, its ENTERTAINMENT!! Yes it takes a special person to have such talent and dedication but it is just a game. I'm a HUGE Giants fan but I don't allow all of this to have such an affect on my life like some of you. Sports are simply entertainment no matter how you look at it. All it does is give someone the right to brag about their favorite team/player when records fall or a championship is won. It takes you away for those few hours in your life where you can escape reality and be apart of something ENTERTAINING. Is it right what some athletes do to get ahead, NO, but we've all done something to give us an advantage in something whether it was right or not. Enjoy it for what it is, A GAME.

You make valid points John, and I'm not going to argue with you as I'm not a fan of baseball; and so my education on the matter is diminutive. Perhaps the game was corrupted by the owners and managers--it certainly seems as though it was (some of this matter was discussed in the aforementioned documentary), but this was a problem of the players, and not of the fans. I'm not sure how it actually affected the game, but it seemed to me that the lower salaries actually helped to bond players and fans; where as today the demarcation that exists between player and fan is vast. This was the resplendence I speak of.

The fact that some of us can get so worked up over something we have no control over. Once again, baseballs sole purpose is to ENTERTAIN the fans. Its a GAME.

Who is worked up? I'm not picking on you, but we're all just having a discussion here. I don't understand why you are feeling the need to calm us all down. I think the thread going along fine. Am I missing something?

I don't feel like your picking on me at all and I didn't make that comment to calm anyone.. I actually thought the discussion was rather interesting. Its safe to say that I assumed it was getting a little heated by my interpretations of some of the comments nothing more.
