      ZZ383 help needed

I want more power for my 67 Camaro.

The car has manual brakes and is mostly street driven with the very rare occasion of going to the track.

What cam/heads/rockers/intake would you guys recommend? I currently have full MSD ignition-car weighs approx. 3,000 lbs. manual trans-3:73 gears.

I read good things about the dart pro 1 platinums but I dont know if thats the way to go or not, and if so, what size? I called Dart twice and two techs told me two different sizes.

The info that has been provided to me by this site has proven invaluable in the past.

Are you smellin what I'm steppin in?

The ZZ383 responds very nicely to a cam swap. Do some digging around. The stock zz383 cam is very mild. With your light car you can easily go with a bigger cam and get an extra 40-50 HP.

Andrew, I appreciate your response, you have helped me in the past.

My main concern is not knowing how large of a cam that I can step up to without having piston to valve clearance, I have heard that the factory springs are pretty much maxed out with the factory cam that came with the engine. So, thats why I am considering a head swap as well.

This is what I am thinking, and hopefully someone can help me with my cam/combo concerns.

Heads: Dart platinum pro 1's (aluminum) runner size of either 180cc? or 200cc? And 64cc chambers

      Intake: Victor junior intake

      Cam: ?????????????

For some reason, info on this engine is tough to come by.

I believe the factory setup is; flat top pistons, 62cc heads, 9:1:1 compression.

However, I dont know how to choose a combination that will work with this setup without clearance issues.

      All help/info is appreciated.

      Thanks,
      Ed

if you're looking to spend some serious cash on this, then AFR 195's are the way to go.

For the intake I would definitely run a good dual plane. The single plains really hurt torque without much of a HP gain. Look into the new Weiand intakes. Excellent designs.

I can't help but think... if you are changing everything anyways why use the ZZ383 bottom end? If I'm not mistaken that is an unbalanced rotating assy with hypereutectic pistons. Fine for the ZZ383 platform, but certainly not a great combo for a big HP setup.

It sounds like you are willing to throw out 3/4 of the engine already, why not just start from scratch and bag the ZZ383 for another project?

I'm thininkg around $1,800 to $2,000 for this next round, and I have considered AFRs.

Andrew, I took your advice on the Weind 8121 and I like it alot, however, I thought after changing the cam and heads a Victor Jr would be a better choice.
Do you agree? or should I stay with the 8121?

Lowend, I only have about $2,000 for this stage of the project as I am also going with the TKO 600. Or, I would definately spend the $ and add forged pistons and internal balancing in the mix so I could spray it. The ZZ383 has a forged crank and P.M. rods so its not actually junk (not that you said it was.) I am on limited project funds rite now.

The car runs great, I just want more!

So, knowing that this engine has flat top pistons and is currently running 62cc chambered heads, if hypathetically I went with the AFR 195's,

      What and why-

      Chamber size would you recommend?

      Intake?

      Cam?

I am running 1 3/4 Hooker super comps also, if that helps.

Thanks again foir your help, I am just trying to figure this out.

I would check out the 8150 considering that the heads are not going to have the vortec bolt pattern.

I really like the Weiand Stealth Air Strike™ Intake Manifold part number 8501. It is a air gap type intake and a fairly HIGH rise design. As Andrew mentioned, I doubt to 6500RPM there is any advantage to a Victor.

We just used this intake, along with Holley's new 300-552-1 heads on Michael's Monte Carlo 355CI. Along with Lunati camshaft, it is really a killer package. The heads would be on the small side (184CC intake ports) for a higher performance 383, but their 20 degree design is intriguing to say the least. It would be a torque monster for sure, and probably make some good power.

Here is a pic of the Air Strike on Michael's Monte

For me I would look around for a set of AFR 195 or AFR 200 heads,
As for the cam i like the torque from my LT4 HOT rollers.
Now I like to use 1.65 Comp roller rockers instead of the suggested 1.6 rockers.
This upps the lift from .525 t o.541,, now I run standard stamped 1.5 rockers giving me .492 lift, but they still make awesome torque and can be bought for less than $200 usually (at least I did)
I have thought of running one with retrofit roller lifters in my 283.
I built a 060 for a fella and used Vortec heads and got almost 480 hp from a 283, very nice.
For an intake I like the Performer RPM Air Gap and get a good 3310 with drop boosters(the off idle stransition from the drop boosters is much better than straight leg.
Yes I recomend a vac secondary carb, I use a 4.5 power valve and if you can get it set up for 4 hole idle and use an adjustable secondary kit, and you can tune this thing to rip.
The 355 in my 78 C10 is a torque monster and pulls like a diesel with no big rear gears.
      List:
AFR heads (size depends on RPM range,,my choice is the 195s
      HOT cam
      1.65 rockers
      Performer RPM Air Gap
      3310/780 Holley or equivalient
With the 383 get a good set of 1 3/4 headers, (this thing needs to move lots of air)
      Good Luck
