      hidden stereo?

Hi I have a Covan's dash in my 69 and don't want to hack it up for radio, any alternatives? I guess in trunk or hidden in glove box? Is there any way to use I-pod type or new tech?

I have a Custom Auto sound SS stereo with Ipod connect that has a RF Remote and a wired remote under my front seat in my 69. Check out their website. I may be selling mine in the next month since I'm planning to change to a complete Sony system if it works out. PM me if interested for a great price on the head unit, disc changer and both remotes.

I've seen this done on some cars in the car audio realm, but it requires a little electronic ability. They disassemble the detatachable face nad use a ribbon cable to mount it remote from the box. with a much small piece it would be easier to stow away, and you could hige the cd unit under the seat or whatever. just an idea. people have done this to mount the faceplate where the front overhead lights go.

Both Sony and Clarion offer what's called a "Marine Commander". It's a 3" Diameter wired remote. It has a LCD display and is surface mounted. It allows full control of a trunk mounted deck. You can add stuff like Sat radio, ipod, cd stacker etc and it's all controlled from this round remote. We use them alot in streetrods where you don't want to see a ugly modern day deck hanging from under the dash or stuff in the glove box. I haven't used the Sony one personally but we always take the Clarion one apart and paint the housing to blend in with the interior better.

We sell the Custom Autosound systems at the shop and in my opinion, they are total crap, the QC on their product is just not good at all, not to mention old school technology.

Something to think about instead of getting a underdash mount or glove box mount.

We also have hidden them in ashtrays and on sun visors for easy access.

A guy on NastyZ28 wanted to leave the stock radio and then have a hidden system. He mounted a head unit in the glovebox, then used an IR repeater and the remote that came with the head unit to control it. I thought it was a pretty neat idea.

Is that what this thing is?

Check out Dale Jr's Camaro that DSE built, he mounted his under the dash and apparently uses this crazy thing to control it. Kinda neat.

I used a cable that has RCA plugs on one side and mini 3.5mm headphone jack on the other side. THe amp has adjustable gain control so it can be fine tuned with the output from the iPod.

That is what I was talking about. The Clarion one also has a stainless trim around it on their top end one.

Most radio's today have a mini 3.5mm jack in the back that allows for steering wheel buttons to work on the newer cars. This jack can be used for control the stereo for hidden applications. You could then use an ir repeater and hide the unit anywhere in the car. We do them at the shop all the time

An ipod can be used in any situation. We did an Ipod on John Parsons Nova which is on the cover of PHR this month. We made a custom center console with a docking station for his Ipod

The amps are hidden and the 8' sub is in between the back seats in a hidden center console. I only speakers you see is the door skeakers and John says it rocks out over his bad a#* LS2 motor
