Viper T56 vs LSxT56 for 1st Gen w/console

I need help.
I haven't done the research yet regarding the Viper T56, the standard LS1,2,6 T56, and any possible difference on the LS7 T56. (assuming it is still a T56) I didn't think I'd be buying until next year.
I have a 1st Gen, and I do want to use the stock console if I can.

I expected to get a used or rebuilt T56, and possible send it off to Rockland Standard Gear or somewhere to be freshened up and have it upgraded where necessary to handle the abuse I'll give it. (drag time, lots of miles, 500 or more TQ)

Would I be better off starting with a regular T56 or with a Viper T56? Might the Viper one save me money in the long run? Does it shift the same as the LSx model? Shifter location? Tunnel clearance?
Heck, I just realized I don't even know the gears in the Viper T56! damn!

Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated! I could pick up the Viper T56 right now if it makes sense in the long run.
