      700r4

To start , I am no mechanic. I have a 69 Firebird with a Chevy 350 motor stroked to a 408 Stroker. I have a TCI 700r4 Super Street Fighter transmission. With a TCI Super Street Fighter torque converter with a 3200 stall. Transmission and Converter are lock up for Highway Driving. Car is at a shop about 99% done. Problem. The torque converter is making a clunking sound. But when they unplug the electrical to the transmission that has to do with the lock up to the torque converter kicking in. It drives and shifting perfectly, no whine and no clunking. The guy working on my car is not to familiar with the 700r4. He says when it has the electrical wires plugged in it is trying to lock up even in low speeds. So he says it seems like something electrical. I think he said possibly solenoid sending constant signal to torque converter to lock up, that is why this is happening. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

The lockup on my 700 goes through the 4th gear pressure switch “only” and it supplies ground to the solenoid that does the lockup. The solenoid has constant 12vdc on the other side. Depending on how yours is set up it could lock up in other gears if desired. It’s all in the wiring for it. Mine is also on a switch so I can control power to the relay that sends power to it too.

      Clunking

Does yours make a clunk sound? When wiring unhooked transmission shifts perfect, no clunking or whining. What is your stall? Mine is suppose to be 4th only. Could it be wired incorrectly? Mine is TCI, never used. BUT, sat in box new for 12 years before installing.

No noises in mine at all. I used a Neal Chance converter in mine too and honestly the lockup wasn’t even hooked up until it had been in the car for five or six years. Never had any issues with either though.

You need to counteract tci and find out if they have any pressure switches installed for lockup or is the connector straight wired to the TCC solenoid (Torque Converter Clutch).

If it's straight wired you could use a B&M lockup controller or have someone install a 3rd or 4th gear pressure switch to control lockup.
