1970 Elcamino build!

[Threepointtwo]

Nice work. I love El Caminos. I had one in high school and used to back down the boar ramp into the water and could load a jet ski right into the bed.

thank you sir!

Transmission cross member. I had a temporary cross member in the car and needed to build something better. This is what I came up with!

Very cool! I am eager to see how this turbo setup works.

Figuring out the cold side. Got the tubing mocked up then I liked it so I made it permanent.
I will have to figure out the intercooler after the car comes off the rotisserie.

[andrewb70]

Is there an intercooler somewhere?

Andrew

Andrew

Yes sir
it will be in the front of the car, I was thinking about putting it in the bed but changed my mind.
When the body comes off the rotisserie then I can start figuring out how to make it fit!
i did a temporary hook up to the throttle body as I have been told I wouldn’t need the intercooler because of the distance from the turbo to the throttle body.
my first turbo build learning as we go.

I am learning that turbo cars get very complicated very quickly and there is SO MUCH plumbing!

yes yes they do.lol!
I been thinking I should have just put it up front like everybody else.
could have saved $200 in tubing.

[David Sloan]

On the cold side I needed to make some beads around the ends to help hold the connectors/clamps to the tubing so I took this cheap bead roller and tried it out, it didn’t want to do the mild stainless tubing. It would flex badly.
Took a couple c clamps and a piece of 1/4” plate and that seemed to work pretty good!

[David Sloan]

I’m at that point we’re I pulled all the mock up parts off the car, now I needed to fix the cut outs I made for the exhaust and the cold side going to the front of the car.

[David Sloan]

Next up is some rust repair.
Passenger side quarter panel is repairable.

Thanx Andrew...I've been away for awhile, but I pop in now and again to check up on you guys.
Looks like you're going to town on the GTO too.
Even now that I'm retired I dont put in as much work on the car as you guys do.

Well, get it together! Would be great to have you come down for LS Fest. There is a huge group that comes from the Chicago area.

I'm aware that rear mount turbos are common. That's a lot of cubic inches or area. Is the lag minimal or something around a second to go from idle to full throttle?

Well I don’t have the answers to your questions as this is my first turbo build and I’m learning as I go!
i did some research, on remounted turbo and there’s no real conclusions on how it s going to work.
lots of people say it’s going to suck and others say it will work fine.
i fiqured this was an experiment and I’m learning so I’m prepared to make adjustments/changes
hope that helps.

Driver side quarter panel was the worst so I’m just going to replace it. Need some good weather so i can get some sandblasting done the finish fitting the quarter panel.
