6" backspace on an 8" width wheel is a lot for a GM A-body car. Something in your car's chassis set-up that requires it?

If you are running a stock setup then 6" backspace will make the wheel sit in too far

Hey, I also am shopping for wheels and tires for my '66 Tempest. You're gonna have to find a tire size you want, then see what offset/backspacing you need to make it fit. On my Tempest with UMI suspension, the outside face of the wheels should stay where they are, the inside has room for width. As you increase the width, you increase both the offset and backspacing. Check out https://tiresize.com/wheel-offset-calculator/ to see what you can do.

The size I've got now is 225/70r14. That puts them about 26" tall and 8" wide. I believe the wheel is either 7 or 8" with zero offset, not totally sure.

I want to keep the front diameter the same and use a taller diameter in the back both to add rake and better fill the wheel well.
The max tire width I can fit in the front measures out to about 295, the back could be 315'ish-- but after talking to the fine folks on this forum, I've decided to go square and to be less ambitious with width. I'm now planning for 275 width all the way around.
The diameter (tire height) I am trying to stagger. By looking on tirerack, you can enter a combo of different sizes for front and rear and it'll tell you what matches. https://goo.gl/egkpFT

Once you find a pair of tires, that calculator above will let you enter an offset until the tires line up like you want. Now you're looking for a wheel that's exactly the size you want.... which is hard to find.

Anyways, that's been my journey. At first I picked out wheels I liked on American Racing but then I started caring about staggered diameters and trying to keep an equal contact patch front+back.

      Good luck!

i currently have a 16" Stock GTA Wheel (rear wheels) on all four corners those wheels are stock 16x8 with 5.25 back space if i remember right and my tires are 255/55 all around as well with no rubbing and its lowered with a full SPC suspension i do wish i had the shorter 12 bolt chevy rear from 66 but mine is a dec 66 rear that happens to be longer so i do not see that a 6" backspace will be a problem
