Options for timing control with efi

Still weighing options for controlling ignition on my FAST efi
I found an article that discuss different solutions that apply to any aftermarket efi system

It would help to know what engine, FAST system, and distributor you currently have.

I know I can do it with a fast dual sync distributor and either the fast ignition box or an msd 6AL box. My main concern is that when I swap an LS in a year or so non of this ignition gear will carry over. So I'm being cheap
The other thing I'm trying figure out is what is actually the best way. A lot of guys on the Holley forums and yellow bullet use crank triggers with locked out dizzys
Plus I just thought that article was an interesting read on a little discussed topic and might help someone.
I usually just lurk across multiple forums and collect info from various websites and don't really share anything.

I know it's kinda switching gears on you but take a look at EFIConnection.com. Their set-ups kinda bridge the gap between SBC and LSX. You could even go ahead and run coil-on-plug ignition and the highly tunable GM ECU. All of which will obviously carry over to the new engine when you make the swap.

I'm not sure if you've bought yet but FiTech has timing control on all their systems as a standard feature

I really like the Fitech stuff the more I read about it. Not having to buy the boxes for timing or a fuel pressure regulator really makes this kit an excellent value at $995
      BUT
I have already purchased the FAST kit off a forum member here. It was kind of an impulse buy as it was a pretty good deal and my 20+ year old Edlebrock carb has been acting up anyway. I like the FAST color display and was going to use it like a RacePak since I dont have any gauges in my car besides fuel/speedo. Not sure if the Fitech handheld has tach needle display like the FAST
Had I done a bit more research or was buying this stuff new I would have almost certainly gone with Fitech. Plus they are local to me in SoCal.
The added expense of ignition timing with the FAST setup has me considering if it is even worth it for my mild cam low hp(maybe 300?) SBC.

      This is an interesting idea/suggestion.
I have been reading various threads where guys use the FAST XIM contoler and some type of distributor less system for spark on SBC/BBC builds. More researching is required to find out exactly how it all works but atleast I would already have the right box to fire LS coils in the future.

FAST makes the dual sync distributor like you had mentioned. This can be used for timing control and it even throws the computer a crank/cam signal for sequential injection engines. FAST also makes Small Block Chevy crank trigger kits or you can buy their adaptor plug to install an MSD crank trigger. Assuming you're using a FAST efi harness, you should already have the crank and cam wires installed.

What's the need or want for an LS engine? You're close to having full timing control on your engine. An LS engine is not that much lighter than a small block and you will spend a lot of money on parts to adapt into whatever car/truck it's going in. The cheaper affordable LS's are iron blocks.

I don't want to sound like a spokesman for FAST because that's what I have. I noticed you are running the Sportsman so I would recommend just using your SBC and expanding on the FAST setup you already have.

FAST's single coil/cdi box kit and dual sync distributor is probably the easiest setup that gets you full timing control without getting into complex systems. You're literally dropping in full timing control with a dual sync!

Later down the road, if you're making more power and want more timing accuracy then I would install an MSD or FAST crank trigger. I was like you before being overwhelmed by all the crazy setups everyone else is running on all the forums, websites, etc. What I just laid out for you on this thread is the exact route I'm doing with my Pontiac engine's ignition system. The only difference with me is that I'm running a FAST XFI 2.0 and port injection.

Best of luck with the build and I hope this helps with making a decision!

For my current application it seems the FAST ignition components are prbly the way to go. Less chance of EMI problems and its plug and play
Controlling Timing will help me run E85, which is only $1.90 in CA and gas will be back to $4 in California in a few months when they switch to summer blend.

The reason I want an LS engine eventually is the 100lb weight savings, it wont leak oil like my current sbc, and the ease of getting to and drivability of a 500+hp engine. I'd like to swap to a 6sp manual trans at the same time(TH350 currently). I have an Art Morison front sub so LS installation should be straight forward with the correct engine mounts, headers and trans mount

I am viewing the FAST system as a modular upgrade to be used with the LS later. I posted in your other thread about the RHS/FAST intake manifold being compatible with late model heads
(edit*I was misinformed about the FAST manifold. It will NOT work with LS heads)

That way I dont need to worry about finding a complete engine, and said longblock will be much cheaper especially since I would need to swap intake and front drive accesories anyway if I go with an aluminum truck motor like I plan too.

^^^You should not see a change in Ethanol content in Cali. We really do not have a winters blend. Im in Vegas and we are the same way..You probably already know, watch your fuel injector/system ceiling and your won't come close to it while on E85 since it needs more fuel to achieve the same amount of power the unleaded.

I have the FAST 2.0 TBI with 8 injectors supposedly good for 1200hp(800hp E85) I am also going to run a walboro 255lph intank and plan on using -8 lines. This should be sufficient for my current mild SBC. Down the road i might need a larger pump for the LS

I'm still collecting parts and have yet to order the FAST dizzy and CD ignition. I have to plan my fuel lines this weekend so i can order the proper length PTFE lines and fittings from Brown & Miller Racing Solutions(SoCal office in Santa Ana)

Here's what my order of operation would be for you....

      1) Install the efi and use the standard igntion.

      2) Order the cdi/coil ki. You can even install this on your standard ignition system before going about the efi.

      3) Last step would be to order the dual sync for timing control.

      4) Optional - If a true crank sensor is desired, install an MSD or FAST crank trigger kit. Not necessary due to the dual sync distributor but true crank angle accuracy is nice in theory.
