Ridetech 48 Hour Corvette Build Thread

I'm going to start this thread and keep updating it as parts arrive and ideas come up. The build dates are set for March 10th-12th.

This will be our second "48 Hour" build. The first, being the "48 Hour Camaro", was a very successful project that showed there are parts available (by multiple companies), that truly are "bolt-on". We started off with a bone-stock, 67 Camaro on day 1. By then end of the 2nd day, we had a monster, on the road and track. For information on that build, here's a link - http://www.ridetech.com/48hourcamaro/

This build will be the same style build (except we're using an eBay purchased '72 Corvette, this time!), a group of guys, a room full of parts, and three 16 Hour work days. The entire build will streamed live on YouTube, with manufacturer specific question and answer sessions and interviews throughout. As the C3 is disassembled, the parts that are not being reused, will be available for purchase on eBay. Once the car is done...we're take the car straight to the track! Below, I have the rendering, list of companies that are in on the build, and the new logo.

This build can also be followed at http://www.ridetech.com/48hourcorvette/.

I think we should do a 6 hour Tigercage install on a certain Monte Carlo. Just saying.

The "bolt on" pieces that make these cars perform like a modern sports car is what the build is really trying to showcase, by multiple companies. It works well for many companies because there are many people that like the same cars. The 48 Hour Camaro project worked very well in the past, now it's time for a new build!

One of the major areas where any 1972 vehicle will need improvement is in the braking department. The 48 Hour Corvette is no exception… in fact it might be the poster child example for the too much go and not enough whoa.

With “tiny” oem disc brakes on all 4 wheels bringing this car to a stop can a challenge under “normal” driving and this car is destine to see a significant share of what most civilians would describe as “abnormal driving”. So clearly something has to be done.

Thanks to Baer Brakes, after the 48 Hour clock ticks off, the Corvette will be riding on some serious state of the art stopping power. When we contacted Baer, we were found out we weren’t quite ready yet to get the stuff on a brown truck heading to Jasper.

      14″ Front Extreme+ Brake System
This system features the 6S 6-piston Monoblock caliper mounted to a 14″ 2 piece slot, drill, zinc plated rotor. Baer systems include stainless steel brake hoses as well as calipers that have D.O.T compliant dust and weather seals. Quality SKF or Timken bearings used, along with NAS high grade stainless hardware for our pre-assembled 2-piece rotor. The 6S and 6R (R-Spec) calipers are Baer’s Flagship offering, and are built out of a single piece of US sourced 2618 forged aluminum.

14″ Rear Extreme+ Brake System with Park Brake
This system features the 6S 6-piston caliper mounted to a 14″ 2 piece slot, drill, zinc plated rotor. Baer systems include a unique billet backing plate that not only acts as a caliper mount, but also houses the bankisa (1-piece) park shoe. This is a more modern (better working) park brake assembly then the more commonly used drum in hat park brake systems. Systems feature stainless steel brake hoses as well as calipers that have D.O.T compliant dust and weather seals. NAS high grade stainless hardware is used our pre-assembled 2-piece rotor.. The 6S and 6R (R-Spec) calipers are Baer’s Flagship offering, and are built out of a single piece of US sourced 2618 forged aluminum.

      Why Purchase the Extreme+?

      US Made Forged MonoBlock caliper
Offers the exact same look front and rear. Baer is the only brake manufacturer that offers this!
Calipers have dust and weather seals
Proper banjo fittings (NOTE: Baer does not use any pipe thread fittings)
Everything needed per corner (including hoses and fittings) except for in General fit applications
6061 T-6 billet aluminum hat (anodized black) and bolted to the rotor
High grade U281 fine thread stainless hardware (with captured nuts). Rotor comes pre-assembled.
Includes a set of 6061-T6 billet machined hubs with Timken or SKF bearings installed. Hubs are pre-assembled with bearings, races, studs and packed with Redline synthetic grease.
      The 6S Extreme+ Caliper Features:

The 6S/6R monoblock caliper is Baer’s flagship offering, and machined out of a single piece of US sourced 2618 forged aluminum
The only 6 piston forged monoblock offered to the road-going/street market
Stainless steel pistons, abutments and noise suppression springs
Staggered piston sizes to minimize pad wear
Uses the common D1247 (DR11) race pad backing plate, that is shared by many other competition calipers.
Dual seals (dust/weather and pressure) to meet D.O.T specifications
Caliper can accept 13.5” to 16” rotors.
Machined logo that is hand painted
Red, Black or Silver Powder Coat Finish (custom colors available)
Available in Front or Rear for that same cosmetic matching look
Rear systems incorporate a drum in hat park brake
Rear systems for c-clip style axles include Baer’s Verislide self centering brackets
Uses correct banjo style fittings, Baer does not use any pipe thread
100% MADE IN USA with US sourced material

The Remaster is a fully machined, billet aluminum master cylinder that features:

Fully Machined out of aluminum in Phoenix AZ
Comes standard in Anodized or Polished (custom colors and finishing available for special order – additional charges apply)
Compact short design which allows this master to fit in a wide variety of applications (great for early Mustangs with modern boosters such as 1967-1969)
GM and Ford will use the same master (Firewall mount is designed to fit both). Will include a bullet (insert adapter) for long pushrod applications
Machined screw in caps for easy access to fill (no tools needed). Caps are knurled at edge to make removal easy.
Bolt on Firewall mount bracket. This master can be reused in other projects with a change of the bolt on bracket
Laser etched logos and part numbers for a finished look (on anodized version)
Bolt on proportioning valve block (additional option) is available

I don't know about you but I've never seen a '72 Corvette with ridetech level 3 coil cover suspension, a Lingenfelter LS7, Baer brakes and more. I think we all know of a pretty wild Blue '72 but it's drastically different.

I think the term you're looking for is plug and play because this build is far from unoriginal because the corvette protouring trend is still gaining momentum.

All that aside, how often do you see a '72 Vette driving around anywhere these days. Rarely unless you're at a car show or event.

The C2/C3 Corvette definitely isn't something that you see an abundance of, this will be a new ballgame for sure.

The best part of a build like this is giving everyone a recipe for building there own. It takes away a lot of the questions and fitments. It also proves how well everyone's parts work and work together.

The one thing that the ridetech crew is adamant about is running off the shelf parts. The team cars all run the same parts everyone else is buying.

My 72 is close to finished hope to have it at Goodguys in March! Pretty mild LS3 kept the four speed wilwood all the way around still needs some suspension help but working on finishing that as we speak.

We've got all kinds of cool parts coming in, it's nice to see everything that's going to be stuffed in this car!

      Magnum 6-Speed Transmission

The kingpin of TREMEC’s high performance line-up, the T-56 Magnum double-overdrive 6-speed transmission takes the very best from TREMEC’s current OEM technologies and pairs it with the most popular features of the TKO 5-speed.

Able to withstand a massive 700 lb-ft. of torque while providing unbelievably crisp shifts, no other manual transmission on the planet offers as much combined strength, versatility, and general ease-of-use as the T-56 Magnum.

Known in its original equipment form as the ‘TR-6060′, the Magnum is an aftermarket version of the same transmission found in many of today’s most celebrated factory super cars – including the ZR1 Corvette and ACR Viper – giving you refinement where you want it and strength where it counts.

The aftermarket’s premier 6-speed performance manual transmission
      700 lb-ft. of torque capacity
Reasonably light at 135 lbs. dry
Multiple shifter locations & dual speedo pickups for unmatched versatility
Choice of two different gear ratio sets (2.66 or 2.97), with unique double overdrive ratios
Incredibly short, extremely low-effort shift throws, with crisp, precise engagement
Modern OE supercar technology for the ultimate pro-tourers, road-racers, and more.
