      LS2 / LS3 / LS6 oil level sensor issues

      Anybody know how that sensor (oil level sensor) works? The schematic seems to suggest a simple 12v signal that is either open or pulled to ground.



      But I can't seem to get repeatable results during testing on a customer car. Is there some sort of buffering built in where the ECM counts how long the sensor is indicating low oil before turning on the light? Or does it take key cycles?

      Any ideas?

      In case anybody cares, I worked this out. The GM sensor is a simple switch that connects when surrounded by fluid, and goes open when the fluid level drops below the sensor.

      I'm using this in a dry sump tank for a track car, and wanted to give the driver some advance warning when his oil tank level was low, so he'd have 30 seconds or so to get off the track and shut the motor down, or ease up on the throttle, or something.

      Anyway, by connecting one side of the sensor to ground, and the other side of the sensor to pin 85 on a single pole dual throw relay, I can provide a warning light when the fluid level drops. In fact, I've put two sensors in the tank, so the first one is caution, and the second is danger.

      Relay connections: 87a goes to red light, 30 and 86 go to switched power, 85 goes to the tank switch/sensor, and (optionally), 87 goes to a green light (if you want positive assurance of adequate oil)
