      Winter Tips/Tricks.

Hey guys, as you can see this thread is about winter time storage. And yes even though its still technically summer I like to plan ahead and make sure my car gets the best treatment possible in the cold months. I live in northern IL and the typical temp is about 15 degrees daily. For the winter I have a big enclosed shed that has a roof and four walls to protect it from snow. While in the shed it will but covered. But even with these walls, it keeps the snow out but not the temp. Its falls under twenty degrees in there regularly and I don't like that. Its the best I can work with right now since money is pretty tight. What are some winter tips you guys have? I'm not asking you guys with big garages that a climate controlled to be nice and hot in the winter. Im asking the guys that have to worry about their cars in a few months. So if there are any tips that are helpful please share them. Also, I know it will depend one the specific climate in that year. But when do you guys typically put your cars away and take them out again in the spring? Do you run the engine every now and then to get things flowing again? How many times if so? Ive had classic cars but nothing like my new 1971 Buick Skylark. This car is my baby and I want to treat he with the best care possible during winter. So any tips would help, thank you!

I always tell others to take the high road, that way there's more room for me on the low road

I live in mid eastern Iowa so i have about the same temps that you do, just a bit colder. With what you have to work with throw a battery tender on it if you can, if not take the battery out and charge it in the house. Other then that just start it up every 3 or 4 weeks and let it idle and get up to temp and just let it sit for a few minutes while idle and then shut her down till next month. Ive done that for years, and Ive never put anything in the gas either even tho that wouldnt hurt and its only a few bucks.

      What he said ^!

Throw some stabil or Seafoam in it before you put it away and run it for a bit too.

As for tires... DEI makes foam/rubber pads to put under the tires to help prevent flat spots.

1.Change the oil before putting it away. Use the best oil available an oil that is designed with rust and corrosion inhibitors. This way it will have the appropreiate film to protect during your storage period. 2. I fill my tank full and treat it with a stablizer and hook up a battery tender. Cover it and say goodnight!

Also, I know it will depend one the specific climate in that year. But when do you guys typically put your cars away and take them out again in the spring?
I'm from Iowa and drive mine until they put salt/spray on the roads or its to cold. I don't pull it out again until it has rained plently and I feel the roads are clean and clear of that nasty stuff.

Do you run the engine every now and then to get things flowing again? How many times if so?
There is no reason to do this. As long as you use the right oil it will be protected.

Ive had classic cars but nothing like my new 1971 Buick Skylark. This car is my baby and I want to treat he with the best care possible during winter. So any tips would help, thank you!
I've had great results with AMSOIL products for both stablizer and the proper motor oil. I would highly recommend considering it. I have a deal going on the board that will save you a considerable amount over retail. You can see it in the link belowQUOTE]

Aren't these forms awesome for learning new things and debating old theories and thought processes? I'm in the automotive business and most of my colleagues and friends are as well. My business happens to be a Pennzoil supplier/user and I've made good friends at that company. So, I thought some of you might like to have a read of the following regarding the whole ZDDP theory and old technology.

Personally, I use the top of the line Pennzoil Ultra and have been very happy. Warning this thread I'm posting is long but there is some really good information in it if you are interested.
