      New Dodge Hemi

      I am looking at the dodge challenger
      and wondering .... why are they making the new HEMI out of
      cast iron and not aluminum ???

      ok cast iron block sure but why not least aluminum heads???

      I know in the after market world you can buy a all aluminum hemi crate engine

      anyone know???

      All new hemi's since the first ones back in the 2003 ram have aluminum heads and a cast iron block. The new eagle cyl heads can flow like crazy and support a lot of power. Like you I really wish that an aluminum block was available at least in the performance vehicles. Rite now you can get a 6.1 block from mopar in aluminum, Ive read that it shaves 100 pounds but that so far is the only option. I have not read anything on the new 6.4 yet but I would not be surprised if it also has a cast iron block

      That 6.1 block is 5k so one would really need to shed a 100lbs at that price.

      The new 6.4 is based off the 5.7 (cast iron)less tooling cheaper to build than a special block like the 6.1's.

      Sometimes it sucks to be at the bottom of the food chain...

      This engine is reported as being their strongest engine ever. Also the most hp per liter of any N/A engine in production including the LS7. Is doesnt share anything with anything.

      That's a very good question. The HEMI blocks have all been iron, even the SRTs, which accounts for the added 118lbs. over the new 7-liter, 426 cubic inch Gen III HEMIs. Yes, for those not aware, Mopar offers an all-new Gen III 426 HEMI out of all-aluminum making 540hp and 23mpg. Best of all, as much as the 6.4L 392 was Mopar's crate motor during the days of the 6.1L, the 426 is - although quietly - expected to replace the 6.4L in the next few years.

      Something to keep in mind as well is that sometimes Mopar will have items in the catalog but they may not even be in production. This isn't to say the 7 L won't be available but they do occasionally have an amazing crate engine spec'ed out and listed in the catalog but you will never actually find it in a warehouse. This was the issue for many mysterious R3 block combo's. I hope they actually build these big Hemi's in real numbers.

      Finding one still may be hard even if they do produce them. There is a few really good dealer parts guys on Moparts.com. I think one of the guys is up in Thousand Oaks at a Dodge dealer. He fills alot of orders from around the country because he can find stuff in the system that might be buried in some Detroit warehouse. Find a parts guy with connects and you can find items that says "obsolete" or "out of stock".

      The key to good deals and even finding the part in the first place is to go to the right dealer or parts guy. Chances are, your typical Mile of Cars Mopar parts guy is more interested in picking his nose than finding a hard to find R3 block or W-series heads.

      The fact that it has a 4.09x3.72 borexstroke is pleasing to me as well as the 2.13" intake valve. That thing is underrated at 470hp I guarentee. They also said that they had well over 500hp in testing the engine but made changes to the intake and such to bring it down and torque up because with more hp it doesnt "feel" as fast as it does with more torque when its in a 4000+ lb car.
