      T5: will it live?

thats the main thing im debating about this swap.

its a world class 94 cobra trans that has ~75k on it. my frined will let it go to me for $300.

ill be putting it in a ~3500LB plymouth duster. motor makes 386HP and just shy of 400 ft-lbs at the wheels.

the car does get autocrossed. no serious speed shifting or clutch dropping, though.

no slicks, jsut 240 treadwear street tires.

reason im looking at the T5 is due to the fitment issues in these cars with any of the tremec stuff. with those, you have to cut the torsion bar corssmember pretty severly. and i dont want to do that.

any BUDGET upgrades to make it live a longer and healthier life?

      thanks

many have told me no way but then I found this ... kind of spendy but the T5 is a nice small package which makes sense for me. http://www.astroperformance.com/file...nformation.pdf

They make some great claims, but the T5's trans case is still a weak point. Not that you'll necessarily break the case, but it will distort causing internal damage. You might want to talk to Keisler about their new RS series.

Glad you brought that up they have that covered too. http://www.blowbyracing.com/clsupl.html

Here is the Email I received following up my question of how well a "A-5" kit-ed T5 would hold up to a 427SBC with close to 600TQ.

Yes. The Super T-5 Gear Kit is still available, however, right now we are awaiting Input Shafts to be completed. We are being told it will take about two weeks to complete. Right now by simply adding a Super T-5 Gear Kit, now referred to as the A-5 Gear Kit, to your existing T-5 "World Class" 5 Speed you can increase the torque capacity by 200-250 Ft. Lbs over the stock T-5 rating. Ratio's stay the same as the stock gearing, just that you can put a heck of a lot more power/torque through it. I would recommend adding in three additional items that will not only beef up the torque rating of the T-5 but also increase the Case Strength and the 3rd/4th Synchronizer Assembly. Below is what I would state would be a good idea to purchase for a car making over 500 Ft. Lbs. @ Flywheel:

      -A-5 Gear Kit (1st-4th Gear Kit) $1,350.00
      -A-5 Upgraded 27 Spl. Output Shaft $365.00
      -A-5 Cluster Support Plate $50.00
-A-5 Billet Key Kit for 3rd/4th Synchronizer Assembly $67.00
      -T-5 Master Bearing/Synchronizer Ring/Seal Kit $235.00

      Thanks,

So at just over 2Gs it is pricey, like I said, but for the size ease of install it's worth it to me. Keep in mind these prices are for a Chevy T5. I don't know if theres a difference in price for the Mustang kit.

Right, so you're over $2g plus the cost of the trans you're going to rebuild. Basically about the same for the RS series. https://www.pro-touring.com/showthre...er-RS600/page5

And from the sounds of it the RS series should not be that hard to fit. So unless you putting a T5 in where a T5 used to be, I don't see a justifiable reason to use an upgraded T5.

I've had too many SBF Mustang friends trash WC T5s to trust them enough to spend all the effort to adapt them and plow another $2G + hoping it'll live. That's a lot of money and time wasted if it doesn't work out.

Now if someone wants to donate a beefed up T5 transmission, I'd be happy to give it a go. Anyone? Anyone?

I've put over 10,000 mi on a T5z (stock gearbox but slightly higher torque spec'd than a World Class) behind a 460fwhp / 430 ft lb mustang. IF you don't power shift, and if that torque turns into wheelspin instead of hooking up you'll have no issues. I haven't had any problems with the T5 in my application. Bruce Couture at Modern Driveline knows these gearboxes well, and has given me great service.
