      TH400 tail shaft housings ??

Are there different tail shaft housings for short shaft TH400s ?? I was doing a test fit of my motor trans combo in my 67 'Bird and the rear trans mount doesn't line up with the holes in my cross menber. The holes in the mount are about 3/4 - 1" to the rear of the car. I previously had a different TH400 in my car when I first bought it years ago. I have the right crossmember. Car never been hit. Motor seems to me sitting in the proper location. So I'm a little confused. Here's a pic. Little fuzzy but you can see the problem.

Yes, there are three sizes... Your Firebird takes the short tail. A car like the 67 Bonneville/Grand Prix would take the medium tail and the Cadillac takes the long tail.. Though most call the medium tail the long tail...

I would just slide the crossmember back. Are you sure you have the same tail shaft mount and it's installed properly?

Mount is correct and installed properly. It is a short shaft trans. The cross member is mounted in the proper holes. I did have an Ultra Bell installed when I had JW rebuild the trans. I have contacted them to see if a possible issue with the Ultra Bell could have moved the mount back any. But I know others that have used an Ultra Bell and have no issues.

      Nice car Mark...

I would contact the trans builder like you are doing.. You can get a lot of conflicting info in the interent..

Cliff does all my motor and trans work and I don't make a move without his input...

If the trans builder is unwilling to help, I would contact Cliff, he knows transmissions as well as Quadrajets..

Too bad you didn't have the converter in there on the trail fit, you could of checked the flywheel to converter gap.. That may of reveled the possible bell problem..

Well I may have found my problem. After 33 years messing with my 67 I learned something new today. There are TWO different TH400 crossmembers. One is strictly for big-block Camaros. It is 3/4" SHORTER and offset a little to the pasenger side. The other one is for Firebirds and small block Camaros. It's centered and 3/4" longer than the big-block. I assume when I get home and take a few measurements I'll discover that my crossmember is the big block version.

Nice write up on the different cross members.
