      T56 Chevelle Setup

Need some help with doing a T56 swap without buying the entire kit.

      I'm going with a 2008 L92 and a T56 from a GTO going into a 70 Chevelle.

      1) Does anyone have any experience with a CenterForce flywheel and Dual Friction cluth for this setup? The car will be around 550 HP.

      2) What other parts will I need for the conversion with the hydraulic setup and where would you recommend getting the parts from?

      3) What shifter do you recommend?

      4) Has anyone ran a T56 in a 70 Chevelle and will this setup work with a factory console?

      Thanks so much!

You will be cutting the tunnel out roughly from the firewall back about 36". You will need all of the factory hydraulics along with the clutch firewall bracket. You can just run a stock shifter if it sits in the Fbody location which I'm not sure that the GTO does. I'm sure you could just set the factory consol on the new tunnel where ever it fits. The job isn't too tough if you have the right tools... As for the clutch just use a factory LS7 clutch. It will hold that power no problem and will be butter smooth.

Thanks Phillip glad to connect with you on the sight. Hope you guys are putting that hood to good use. I originally went with the 6 speed auto however I changed my mind nad decided to go with the T56. You would suggest the LS7 clutch instead? I also heard the Z06 clutch is another good fit for this application. Any suggestions on the fly wheel? Can I take you up on the offer on making the tunnel for me?

Where did you guys get the rest of the coversion parts from?

      Thanks!

LS7 is the Z06 stuff. Just use all of it from a 2007-9 Z06... Clutch, flywheel, throw out bearing, pilot bearing, and master. As for the tunnel, cut it out enough to fit the transmission/sensors. Make a cardboard template that fits and then transfer that to an outline on 18g cold rolled steel. Trim it out but leave it so the edges are square to the tunnel. Then I can send it through the slip roll for you at my place. After that you can take it home and finish bending the rest by hand and hammer/dolly. That is how I have done the last 3 of them. Before you make the template be sure to have all of the sensors attached and the crossmember installed. This is no time for assumptions. We are amidst thrashing on a Studebaker for Power Tour so I can't offer much more help then sending it through the slip roll but I can definitely help with that part.

The rest of our swap stuff came from ATS. Which included the clutch master bracket and modified clutch mater.

Thanks Phillip. I see Hurst does sell all the parts needed as well including the floor hump. I will keep you posted and thanks for your help! I did order the LS7 cluth and flywheel combo.

Mike, can you post a link to the floor hump that your talking about? I have installed a few T56's into early A bodies and each one required removing the entire tunnel. The stock tunnel is way to skinny not to mention about 3" to short through the middle. Also, since you are using an LS motor the bell housing is about 2" too tall right at the front. I'm just interested to see how Hurst has tackled these areas.

Some great info. I am on the T56 vs TKO600. Any reason why you both are doing the T56's? I am really new to the manual trannys so I am not sure what I want to put my money on to put behind a big block in my 70' Chevelle.

T56 all the way. You have to cut the tunnel either way so just go for it and put the 6 in there. The T56's are not only smoother but the new Magnum is hard to beat for the price. This is from somebody who has both.. do the T56 and never look back.

I've also had a T56 in a 04 Saleen and it was a great tranny as I was running 700HP at the crank without any problems.

Phillip I called Hurst and they wouldn't sell the hump on it's own as they only sell all the parts as a complete kit. I've ordered all parts from another distributor and will need to work on the tunnel as I know that is the only way to cut the floor and weld in a new piece. I will stay in touch as I move forward on this.

Man it's crazy what everyone says about either tranny. I guess I need to get deeper to figure out where I fall being the best choice. I plan on having in the 600hp range and drive it around town for fun and want to be able to take the car on a "Sunday" drive with the wife (maybe the kids,ha ha) but still if I get a hair in my ass to give the track a try for fun.

I don't know anything about either tranny, is there any info that anyone could help me understand other than 5 vs. 6 speed where these are different?

Sorry to ask my questions here just seemed like you guys could lend some info.

Make a template, transfer it to 18g cut the piece square. Roll it. trim the shape out. Done in probably 15 minutes and ready to beat/weld into place
