Age of tires
Any tire experts here know how to determine how old tires are? I bought a set of used race tires awhile back and I'm not sure how long they have been sitting around. They look fine. I just don't want any surprises on a tough day at the track.

DOT numbers on the tires. Last 4 digits, unless they are old enough to be 3 characters. Although a race tire may not have a DOT number on it. Might be some kind of code/date on it somewhere.

Thanks for the link. I'm not sure these have DOT numbers but I'll have to check.

I checked last night. No DOT. These are GOODYEAR SPORTS CAR tires. It says FOR RACING PURPOSES ONLY NOT INTENDED FOR HIWAY USE.There is a small patch that says
B435. on all four tires but I'm not sure it has anything to do with dating. Guess I'll just have to see how it goes.

Race tires won't have DOT codes,but they are coded for date.

i would guess at 43d week of 1965, they havent made sport car tires like that in a very long time. Chaz

I looked briefly on Goodyear's site but didn't find the answer for you....maybe this will help...look on page 15 of this pdf.

I would say with older race rubber like that it's not safe to use them for anything but display generally (not referring to pics, but rather to original poster). You could check them with a durometer to see how hard the rubber is, but generally in my experience with R-compound/race rubber if it's more then 3-4 years old and hasn't been stored properly it will be as hard as a hockey puck, especially with a few heat cycles on it.

Race tires
Couple of pics of the tires. The rubber feels nice and soft stil. and they are very sticky. I mounted them on the car and drove them down the street and back once. I don't think there were any rocks left on the pavement. They were all stuck to the tires.
