      Stick or auto?

Planning on doing an ls1 swap in a 1981 Trans-am. Original turbo 301 auto. For general ease of installation and budget, would an auto make more sense? I would like to cruise come spring. I love driving stick but I would have to install the third pedal and do more work. Can i just swap transmissions at a later time?

Sure but, why pay twice. Putting a third pedal in is easy. Second gen TA's came with sticks, so installing a third pedal is easy. I want a 5 or 6 speed in mine.

I think swapping transmissions later would be a bit of a PITA since the ECM and harness are different. The crossmembers are different and the T56 might require tunnel mods that would be difficult on a completed car. I would pick the one you want and do it once.

all depends on what you want.. i have a custom 65 chevelle and doing a ls swap and was debating the same thing stick or auto. i thought what i was going to do with the car and said im better off with a built auto since i just want to put it in drive and go.

Like they said above- do it once and do it right. I switched my '84 Trans Am over from a slush box to a 6 speed manual when I did the LS1 swap in that. and I'm glad I did. As mentioned, you can get the pedals via factory parts. Probably the hardest part (if there is such a thing) is setting up the slave cylinder for the hydraulic clutch to work with your second gen pedal set up.

But it will be a lot easier and cheaper now if you do it now, rather than later.

      My 2 cents. I hope it's helpful

6 speed is excellent on gas but if you beat it it will come apart
