      What size for 69 GTO

Can anyone tell me what will fit a 69 GTO. Need to know rim size, backspace, and width.
I'm in Australia and have just purchased a 69 GTO, and I want to throw some new rims in the car before it is shipped.
I have no idea what will fit, so any advice will be great.
I have ordered a front Disc brake conversion kit with 2" dropped spindles, if that makes any difference to the front rims.
      Thanks

What do you want for width, size? What brakes?

I can tell you what I stuffed under my car. I have 18x9 fronts and 18x11 rears with 255/35R18 and 305/35R18 tires but that is with custom front suspension. See my build thread for pics.

Back space on an 18 inch rim should not exceed 5.5 inches in the front. Less with drop spindles and stock control arms. Mine are real close.

9s in the front are hard to fit and you need to measure. Especially if it is lowered. A Chevelle has way different fenders - what fits for a Chevelle may not fit a GTO. The back of the fender opening is where they rub.

11s in the rear are a real tight fit. Again you need to measure and you have to get the backspacing right and your body has to be centered on the frame.

If you want to make sure get 8s for the front and 10s in the rear. Your disk kit may alter the front track.

I can help with specific backspacing since my car is modified from stock. Call Frank at Prodigy Customs where I got my rims - He has a great deal on Forgelines for 11/27/2009. He is familiar with setting up our cars and can give you better numbers based on his experience.

Wheel diameter is a very personal thing but I have to say I think this Goat we put wheels on looks incredible with 19s and 20s.

      19x8/ 5.0" BS and 20x10/ 5.75" BS

If you're trying to optimize the space you have you should figure out what tires you want to run first and work from there. I don't want huge rims on my 69 but I do want performance brakes and tires and for that you need 17's minimum. I also like wide tires and a good amount of sidewall. You need to consider all the factors to get the look you want. Wheel size, tire width, sidewall height(aspect ratio), and tire diameter. For me all that amounts to a 315/35-17 because for the tire selection available this does the best job for all my criteria. Preferably I'd want a tire with more sidewall that would increase the diameter from about 25.5 to 26.5 and fill the wheel well better because the rear well on a 69 can swallow a lot of tire height, trouble is there are no tire offerings. The next best bet is MT's new ET street radial which is offered in 295/45-17 and has a diameter over 27" but there you give up width and selection.

Just don't make a hasty decision, this is one worth stewing on and looking at plenty of pictures.

Your after our hearts! We are going to be in the market for a 69GTO in the next 6 months....

Anyway, we have successfully put 19x8s on the front, and 20x10s on the rear, with several of our lines, but we can accomodate you in any diameter from 17 and up.

Curious, where did you find yours?

Thanks for the info everyone. It is a hard choice to make.
I do like the look of 19/20's on the rear and 18's upfront.
I probably will have to wait for car to arrive, and make some measurements then.
Jon I found mine on the net in Florida, it is a original 2 owner.
Looks very solid and in great condition, hopefully will prove to be so when I finally get my hands on her.

Right on man, keep in touch, and send some photos if you get a chance too. I'd love to see it.

Thanks Jon, I will no doubt hit you up for some price's soon.

I had a set of Bonspeed 20's on my 02 Monaro, which looked great.

I'll post a pic of it, and the new GTO.
